ATTORNEY Earl Melhado, former head of the Securities Exchange Commission, was yesterday arrested and slapped with two counts of fraudulent conversion in relation to clients' money.
Melhado, who vied for the Westmoreland Western constituency in the 2007 general elections on the Jamaica Labour Party ticket, was arrested by Fraud Squad detectives following separate reports from two clients.
In one case, Melhado is alleged to have collected $4.6 million from the sale of a matrimonial property, stemming from a divorce case three years ago, but failed to hand over the money.
Melhado is accused in the second count of withholding $1.5 million of a client's money, which is the deposit from a land deal in Spanish Town that fell through last year.
Yesterday, the 50-year-old Melhado was offered station bail in the sum of $500,000 and was booked to appear in court on November 24.
