Domestic situation thought to be attempted kidnapping
Friday, 29 January 2010
A reported domestic dispute between the grandson of a senior government minister and his girlfriend triggered an alarm of an attempted kidnapping at the University of the West Indies (UWI), Mona Campus Friday afternoon.
Police personnel rushed to the campus after an alarm was raised, forcing a lock down of the campus.
However, it was a false alarm.
It is understood that sometime after 2pm, the minister's grandson and his girlfriend, aged 17 and 18, had a dispute in a car on the campus.
The girl teportedly wanted to exit the vehicle, but her boyfriend would not let her out of the car.
Other persons who observed what was happening approached the vehicle and raised an alarm of an attempted kidnapping.
With persons nervous about the spate of kidnappings, security personnel reportedly locked the entrance of the campus.
The St. Andrew Central Police and the Organised Crime Unit which handles kidnappings were also called in.
But a senior Inspector at the Mona Police Station told RJR News that reports of an attempted kidnapping were false.
She said the two persons involved in the dispute were getting counselling.
And the UWI's Marketing and Communications Unit later issued a statement confirming reports of a dispute between two persons on the campus which forced the security lock-down.
The university said one of the persons involved is a pre-university student while the other is not a student.
The unit added that the two persons involved were taken to the police post on the campus, but did not give any other details.
