Teen girl implicated in murders ordered charged or released
Senior magistrate Martin Gayle has ordered the Police High Command to charge or release a 16-year-old girl held in connection with the murders of AIDS support activist Steve Harvey and investment analyst Jamie Lue.
Magistrate Gayle made the order Friday after attorney Robert Fletcher applied for his client to be released.
According to Mr. Fletcher, the teenaged girl has been in custody for more than a month and her rights are being breached.
Head of the Flying Squad, Deputy Superintendent Cornwall Ford, told the magistrate that the girl will be questioned and charged on Friday.
He said the concerns would be passed on to his superiors.
The 16-year-old, who lives in Grants Pen, St. Andrew, was detained in January along with other alleged members of a Grants Pen-based gang, which reportedly kills people and accesses their debit cards.
The gang was smashed after police swooped down on an area of Grants Pen known as Vietnam.
One man was killed, several people were held, and two guns and stolen items were seized.
Investigators linked the 16-year-old to the crime after she was allegedly found with Mr. Harvey's debit card.
The police also alleged they have evidence that she went with gunmen who kidnapped Mr. Harvey from his Duhaney Park house.
The police say they also have photos of gang members, including the 16-year-old, withdrawing money from the automated teller machine following the kidnappings.
The police say members of the criminal gang had been kidnapping persons, taking them to Grants Pen where they are forced to give the bandits the PIN numbers for their automated bank cards.
Mr. Harvey and Mr. Lue were killed after the men withdrew money from their accounts.
The police are probing at least four other cases.
Dudd; So it was not about hate, but simple robbery eh!!
It is really sad when robbery as a motive for murder seem to be favoured, but I can hear the big sigh from Jamaica on this one
