So what Sister P. must be given a free ride because some numbers of the other side might be tainted?
The Government of which she has been a part of has enjoyed 17 years of corrupt rule in Jamaica that is issue right now. If she does not do something to convince us that she is about to make a 180 Degree turn, then all hell must come down on her head.

She was the one who likened herself to a number of other women leader. Some who have or are on their way to making waves in their country.

I really dislike being the bearer of sad tidings and I don't like having tto repeat myself BUT....Portia Simpson is no more able to change either the direction of the PNP nor the country.
That also goes for anyone from the Labor Party who might assume the top seat.

Jamaica is a heavily indebted, primarily agrarian, industrially underdeveloped country totally under the control of the twin parties of capitalism which is the economic system enforced on Jamaica and most of the hemisphere's,nations by the goliath to the North.

It is impossible to change the lives of the Jamaican people in any meaningful way without a change in how the goods and services necessary for a good life are distributed and neither Portia Simpson for all her high sounding words, the twin PNP and JLP can effect that change without facing down the United States as Fidel Castro and Hugo Chavez are doing.

Jamaicans as Tuff Gong said, are still slaves. Wage slaves, often unemployed or underemployed but slaves nonetheless and neither Simpson nor anyone in the political system today have the courage of a Bogle.

no doubt accepted. what i want to know is what will be discovered in Portia's constituency that has not so far been revealed by all the others who have wanted to stop her up to this point, and also, what will be discovered in her constituency that will not be similar in what's going on in other constituencies? really, what? guns? dons? questionable use of government funds? a body or two? i'd really love to see who in the JLP or the PNP is going to risk having a tit for tat review of their own faults by trying to take on Portia's. And I still see it as a means of trying to stop her before she proves herself in a job she has not held before, nor Audley himself, that of Prime Minister. I still believe she needs to be given at least six months to fall flat on her face, if in fact that is what is going to happen. Anything else is still the same old same old backbiting politics that has nothing to do with what's in the best interest of the masses of Jamaican people.

As for this pragmatism that's supposed to be what's good for the Jamaican people, that line is sooooo old and soooo useless. Jamaicans have had 20 years of non-populist government, probably longer, and everybody is crying about the state of things.

who's talking about giving Portia a free ride? There's nothing free about giving her a chance to govern and then judging her on that as she goes. You want her to do a 180 degree, people are talking as if the 180 won't make any difference, they're going to dig up dirt on her regardless of whether she's proved herself a capable prime minister or not.

i suppose, johnnycakes, that there are moments when ignorance, wilful or not, can be total bliss. after all, if all leaders in developing countries were to totally immerse themselves in the hopelessness of their situations vis a vis the might of America and capitalist markets, then we'd have a world where despair would be rampant. luckily, there are people who persist in hoping and believing that their day to day situations can be made better by more than just accepting their lot as the losers in market forces, that there are other things that can be pursued to achieve quality of life.

nobody is asking Portia to be a miracle worker, or event to become a Bogle or Chavez or a Castro. I personally, would be happy for just someone who can relate to Jamaican people in a way that brings them along and gets them involved in trying to find solutions. A true leader, as I think I've said in this thread or elsewhere, does not have to be the one with the answers himself or herself, but can be the one to inspire and move people to find solutions, and engage the resources need to apply the solutions and make them work.

Jamaica is too used to one kind of leadership, a kind of bastardized noblesse oblige, and personally, i'm hoping Portia will move away from that kind of leadership, just to see where new she can go. It will be hard,b ecause the party machinery is full of dinosaurs (both parties, IMO), even the youth arms have a dinosaur mentality based on a view of politics as personal desire and fulfilment, rather than what the people may want.

We have seen her for 20+ years. You cannot use a reactionary vehicle to bring about revolutionary change, therefore when she chooses her cabinet, once we see who and who is included from the last 17 years, then it is time.
Jamaica cannot afford her any time beyond the first 24 hours after she announces her cabinet.

So then by this measure what then will be discovered among the Labourites that has not been aired before?

As I recall the PNP just went through a leadership contest. Maybe the fact that three out of the four leaders had serious issues in their constituencies no argument was advanced about the sate of Anne Palmer's Constituency.

Now Time Come it is a different period, everything will be up for grabs warts, ticks and the kitchen sink.

Jamaica's problems are for Jamaicans to solve. We don't need any fool to come tell us that it is the world problems. There has always been in problems and crises from the day of the Big Bang. The world's economy has also expanded over 51% in the last 15 years meanwhile Jamaica's economy that is literally a stone throw away from the largest market in the world has contracted and has only seen 10 percent growth in the last 10 years, which statistically zero.

i think the right thing to do is to give her a chance to govern as prime minister then judge her on that task. regardless of what she has done in the past, it would appear that the people of Jamaica are willing to give her a chance to lead. i'm surprised, and yet, not surprised, that the ole boys pay little attention to what the feelings of the masses are in this situation.

not true. micheal manley was a populist leader and he won the election from the jlp. his party is populist in the media and among hardcore political activists. the pnp is still in power and look where the country is.

well, i grant that her call for fasting and prayer is not quite the bold and assertive statement against crime i would have liked. i don't know that idiocy has anything to do with what she has said though, just excessive religiosity, which is something i consider an affliction but nuff people in Jamaica consider a positive quality.
