• Ambassador King’s tapes could damage careers
Charming when he wanted to be, an expert in Caribbean trade, clever in a cunning way and someone with deviant sexual tendencies sum up any verdict on Peter King, were the obituarist to follow the injunction to say nothing but good when speaking of the dead.
But Ambassador Peter King’s death last week, left many in Jamaica’s political, social and business circles wondering if dozens of videotapes seized by police contain evidence, which could compromise or even end careers.
At the death house last Monday, investigators confirmed information received by the Sunday Herald that several dozen scenes of men having anal sex and other wild explicit sex scenes were downloaded off a computer taken from the slain trade ambassador’s house. The police also took several photographs.
King who served in several government ministries and departments dating back to the 1960s was found with multiple stab wounds and his throat slashed. Investigators theorise that the victim, whose naked body was found wrapped in a sheet, knew his killer. There was no sign of break-in at the house, which has a security gate.
Throughout the week, tongues wagged about what and who were on the tapes and speculations multiplied, with sources saying that the collection was more like a library of some of Jamaica’s who’s who in politics, business, members of the diplomatic community, top socialites and at least one high-ranking member of the police force.
Police who said they saw the videos jokingly described the scenes as those in a gay movie starring Peter King. King’s associates, who broke their silence, say he was a gentleman, but one with a kinky streak, which he was able to mask with his infectious smile.
The two-storey house at the bottom of a Private Road off Waterloo Road, sources say, was used as a rendezvous by high flyers, most of whom are either straight gays or bisexuals.
Policemen who patrol the New Kingston area described the road as a regular hangout for young boys with homosexual tendencies. According to sources, scores are usually sequestered at the brothel-type operation operated by King where the “big men” frequently congregated for their regular orgies.
Apparently, these sessions were videotaped and stored and their disclosures could haunt participants, sources argue. Investigators remain tightlipped.
However, they said that although they had interviewed dozens of persons, including two young men who were at the house when King was killed, they were no closer to making an arrest. Senior Superintendent Calvin Benjamin said the police were working to find the killer.
“We want to find the killer because we don’t know if he killed before and if he is not caught he might kill again,” Benjamin said. (See related stories in page 5A)
