....and Matalon reached almost the same conclusions that a study commissioned by Eddie did years ago, at the time there was a GCT, but it was partly through that study that the JLP considered a GCT.

the point im trying to make using the export figure is that somebody is busy manufacturting sois not like the only thing anybody doing is playing with govt paper.


impirst totaled about US$4.2 Billion for the same period..for a deficit of US$2.7 Billion

according to some figures foreign direct investment was abot US$0.7 Billion tourism was worth about US$1.2Billion
and remittance worth about US$1.2 Billion

so on the balance sheet (1.5+.7+1.2+1.2) = US$4.6Billion incomming... and US4.2 billion out going. a positive US$0.4Billion

( jus mek sure unno understan that this is not in government coffers )

Great but 70% of tourism consumables are imported, what about the manufacturers, farmers and other potential suppliers who are not in the export or the import business for that matter?

FDI means at the end of the day earnings will have to be repatriated, how will that pan out?

Most of the budget is slated for debt servicing, while more than 25% of all factories have shuttered their doors.
On that basis how can it be said that we have a so-called sophisticated economy? To the extent that we are only hanging on to GOJ paper, tourism, bauxite, agriculture and a vulnerable remittance inflows who is over simplifying here? It is the one who points this out, or is it the GOJ?

that is a good question... and this is where you really determine the state of the economy. Some of what i hear indicates that money is being made.

Secondly when you post some figures or make reference to some facts posted elsewhere I would like for you to provide the source(s). In that regard I would like to ask you where did you find the number on export/import and the earnings?

I don't know at this time but my argument was tourism is one of the areas that is performing. If you import 70% of your consumables then as I pointed out before a lot of locals who are not in the import export busyness are going to be left out.

Again no one (not I), said money is not being made the question is. Is this enough to offset the other variables? Remember one of the knocks against Eddie Seaga's 80s Government was sure money is being made but it was change that was jingling in poor man's pocket. So how come this is now being advanced as an argument to say the Jamaican Economy is sophisticated?

Not true universally. For the foods, drugs, hardware and department stores yes. For utilities, Mining, Financials and some players in the tourism industry this is just not true.
All of the above except the Spanish Tourism Interests have a minimum guarantee of profits, therefore especially in the case of the utilities all the need to do is to raise their rates.
The Cement Company is protected by a virtual monopoly and The Spanish Hotels operate a ship to shore vertical industry.

44% of the USA GDP is based on consumption the USA consumes more than a 1/3 of the world's output. Most of the factories that have left the USA are not shuttered so to speak they simple move to another zip code in the world to produce goods mainly for the USA Consumers. Any fool can see this. Don't bring this foolishness here, leave it to uneducated trolls. Do you know what the cumulative growth rate of the world is in the last 16 years and what by how much Jamaica has grown since then?

There are lots of money to be made thats for sure, Tourism and Service industry over performing, while agriculture underperforming, not sure what he meant by sophistication but I agree with the solid part in the short term to medium term. Jamaica now has a gold coast (due to level of construction and luxury accomodations) the strip of coast from Rose Hall to almost trelawny, but the inner city garrisons have to be dismantled and integrated with the greater society as that tinder box can explode any minute and set the country back due to preception. Alot of eggs are in the tourism basket right now and that could be an area of concern in the long term.
