Tenure of Mayor McKenzie hangs in the balance
Desmond McKenzie's tenure as Mayor of Kingston and head of the Kingston and St. Andrew Corporation, KSAC, now hangs in the balance.
A special meeting of Jamaica Labour Party councillors of the KSAC is to be held Tuesday during which it will be determined whether Mr. McKenzie should tender his resignation.
Mr. McKenzie says he will step down if there is consensus that he should not remain in office.
Faced with calls for his resignation Mr. McKenzie has organised Tuesday's meeting.
It follows the release of the Contractor-General's report which highlights several breaches in the awarding of contracts by the KSAC.
Speaking Monday on Beyond the Headlines, Mr. McKenzie said it's now up to his JLP colleagues to signal whether he should remain in office.
Mr. McKenzie said he will also be consulting the leadership of the JLP.
Mr. McKenzie has argued that while the KSAC failed to follow guidelines in issuing contracts there was no corruption and the country received value for money spent.
On Monday, Mr. McKenzie announced that corrective measures have been implemented to address the situation.
These include the establishment of an oversight committee to monitor the issuing of contracts and the publishing of information on contracts issued.
But this has not appeased the People's National Party's Youth Organization one of the groups calling for Mr. McKenzie to resign.
Thescoffed at claims by the KSAC that there was no corruption in the awarding of contracts and said with the damming discoveries by the Contractor General, Mr. McKenzie has no option but to tender his immediate resignation.
In the meantime, the Portmore Municipal Council says it has corrected the shortcomings highlighted in the Contractor General's report.
The Contractor General has slammed the Council over what he described as its failure to use competitive bidding in the awarding of contracts.
The report noted that there was no Procurement Committee as mandated by the National Contracts Commission and the municipality's practices do not conform with Government's guidelines.
But speaking with RJR News Monday night, Chairman of the Council George Lee said that shortly after the audit was carried out immediate steps were taken to address breaches.
