Don and community leader is two different things, all dons are by default community leaders, all community leaders however are not dons by default. A Don used to be appointed by the MP of the area and publicly given the blessing by the MP to the rest of the community that this is my guy, if you want to talk to me, you talk to him first, if you need money or work from my allocated funds, talk to this bredda. That was how don ship works, not it has evolved to whomever have the biggest gun and money is now don, MP naw call shots again, matter of fact MP afraid to go talk to some of these so called dibby dibby dons.

In most cases, the area leader IS involved in criminal activities. He must be strong enough to rule his soldiers, and his community, where is word is law. There can be several dons in a community, since it is a title that is earned, but there is only one area leader, who is appointed and have the respect of all the dons.

The area leader is thus the don of dons.

Don is actually a title of respect, and can be earned in many different ways, e.g some DJs are considered dons because of how they bantan others in the dancehall.

There are DJ donman, gallist donman, badman donman etc. Zekes fell in the las category.

Many get respect for the way they handle a situation. Many because of the container load/barrels of imported goods they distribute free of charge in their communities. Loyalty is rewarded with jobs, when contract 'drap'. there are people who get their regular maintenance when the don is abroad. Help with children's school fees etc. But most of all respect is given for keeping the community peaceful.

Most such areas are crime free. Criminals are told to go and do their thing uptown. To commit a drime in the area is to be beaten to death and dumped in a barrel.

Someone broke into my relatives house and stole their television. They were told, not to go to the police, who couldn't help them anyway, but instead to the area leader.

Less than a hour after speaking with him, the television was returned, and the two youths (app. 15 - 16y) who did it were badly beaten, and told to leave the area within the hour or they would die.

Inspite of all the crime in Jamaica, people in the area can sleep with thier doors open, because the area soldiers are on patrol all through the night.

I think areas where the traditional dons exist i.e the one who hold on to power by the power of the gun, is always in turmoil despite the jungle justice metted out on people who break the code. There is always a young blood lurking and plotting plus police will tek off yu head if yu noh mind sharp, look pon bun man out in a Spanish town, how dem light him up.

Rich D. Skeng would be a Don in the traditional sense and also a area leader.

There any many communities where the area leader is usually the eldest person like a rasta man or school principal or even retired police man, so that is how I draw my distinction. An area leader is one who will settle disputes by talking about it instead of running fi the gun, people look to them to assit in small ways like drive so and so go childrens hospital or help with food but there is no drug link or political overlap.
