yes RichD, actually you are correct at least in the case of the bahamas...first of all, there is no fee charged for the maternity ward (public ward) it's free, the procedure is the nurse gives out a package when the mother & infant are discharged from the hospital the package includes:
1) doctor's instructions, antenatal tips etc.,
2) 4 oz baby bottle with infamil feeding, and a disposable diaper, and last but not least
3)the card to carry to the Registrar General's Office to register the birth.

It's heart-breaking to see how Ja's poverty is mashing up so many aspects of peeps lives, making ginnals out of so many etc., etc.,...

i wouldf argue that this fee business is a red herring as far as the registrations go....the problem is caused by a dont care attitude of many people.

You think that is an accident?
Wasn't it the venerable IMF that recommended that fees should be charged on maternity and all other use of the health care facillities in the country??
It would be a intresting situation of the people stop having babies,and then the same bastards that are demeaning them,would not have slaves work for them nor to buy their goods the sell in their stores, so that they can live their cush lives,while holding in disdain. they are a bunch of almost bafoons.
talikg about people who have kids that they can't afford to support,because the country does not make sure that their citizens have work to afford to support the next generations of citizens.
It is a shame.
One more thing. Did you know that up to 10% of African American above certain age,does not have birth certificate,because they were refused registration by the authorities?

it was my experience,that prior to the increase of prices in Jamaica, especially where Government services r concerned, people were very picky about tending to things re documentation...

i was always amazed how many people had a passport, which was regularly used at banks for ID purposes, even when they had no intention , immediate or otherwise,of travelling....it was just a matter of having valid documentation , just in case...

people at the bottom , shall we say, have had this history of tending to this very basic and formerly accessible proof of belonging to the nation....birth certificates etc were guarded carefully , almost reverently....folded within tissue paper and sealed in something plastic....i can vividly see the unfolding of said when being proffered....

so i reject the idea that people r now so lackadaisical given the technological age we live in, when proving who u r is oooooh soooo much more important on a daily basis

i would say , that it is the easy revenue that can be raised, given that people have to do certain things,and this is one way, taxes can be collected easily

unfortunately, people who can least afford to do without this, r the ones being victimised the most

matter of fact, this is giving me an idea re fundraising to afford people in rural Jamaica to get their documents once and for all...

so you think the JAD$200 registration fee has been too onerous? (because if they are sticklers for having the paper the outstanding hospital fee is easy to get around.)

it would appear that it is the bill that has to be paid PRIOR to being given the paperwork which would THEN lead to the paying of the paltry $200 that is the sticking point

it is not the latter that they cannot afford

while we seemingly subsidise any yahoo who comes down wid some plan or the other, the citizens who can do wid said subsidies themselves, are increasingly being shortchanged....

DAT is the real issue....lack of tax funds to provide REAl infrastructure, in ALLLLLL that that means, to the citizens of the country

and wat is more galling is that THIS continues under a party that has built its platform on nationalism, socialism, and every ism that connotes people first

but is the ole people who r our leaders who r encouraging the slackness mentality when it suits them....
case in point the former PM's comment re more ooman, phone etc....a direct and pointed playing to a certain mentality...

is the older heads, who continue to govern and make the decisions on behalf of our people...it is they who continue to pimp the economy and the society on a whole

i shake my head everytime i read another pronouncement from a governing body CEO so to speak...i am amazed at how many of them i know or know of, as they allllll went to 'ivy league' high schools in Jamaica at a time wen schools were 'ivy league' in a different way than they are now...a whole lot of them were the older heads that we looked up to wen dem was in 6th form, spouting Michael's promise and hope of nation building first and foremost

i can see them now vividly....i even have pictures to prove the point of many a discussion forum that went on....

and all were afforded university education in part from the taxation of the masses of people, cause if people tink some naw pay dem fair share now, it was even worse time gaan

and yet i find the 'idealism' that they spouted has been replaced by wat, i do not know...

that is the hurtful part of what i see happening in Jamaica...people who came up and were vocal as young people in the many 'arms' of many 'associations', shall we say, who somehow have themselves, conformed, rather than bring about the change they were soooooo gungho about back then

if they did not achieve the promise, what can we expect from a generation that has grown up primarily wid 'me' as the primarily focus
