KSAC to close Dayton Avenue church
The church at the centre of the sex abuse case involving a 13-year-old girl is to be closed.
The Kingston and St. Andrew Corporation (KSAC) is to serve an order on the Dayton Avenue Church Friday instructing that it cease operations for breaching building regulations.
An investigation carried out by the KSAC on Wednesday confirmed that the Church has been operating illegally as it did not obtain approval from the Corporation.
Mayor of Kingston, Desmond McKenzie, says the building which houses the church was converted from a single-story residential unit to a two-story building without authorization.
Mr. McKenzie says the church will have to be closed until the KSAC grants approval.
The KSAC's Building and Town Planning Department has reported that there is no record of any application for changes.
Mr. McKenzie says this is in contravention of the city's building and town planning regulations which require approval for all construction, as well as change of use within a residential community.
The Dayton Avenue Church has been in the news since a 48-year-old deacon of the church and three teenaged boys were identified as being involved in the sexual assault.
They were subsequently arrested and charged.
The deacon, who later resigned from the church, and the three teenagers are still in police custody after being denied bail a week ago.
