Rocky start for Grand Bahia resort

PEAR TREE BOTTOM, St Ann - Overwhelmed by the teething pains that accompany most start-up operations of its kind, the Grand Bahia Principe resort has been forced to ask its competitors to provide rooms for its guests.

"One travel guide asked us to provide about 50 rooms," said Horace Peterkin, general manager of the Sandals Montego Bay.

According to Peterkin, who is also the president of the Jamaica Hotel and Tourist Association problems being experienced by the new resort were not unique.

"It happens... despite the best intentions, several factors may prevent a resort from meeting its scheduled completion date, and marketing has to start before the hotel is completed, so if the key factors - food, beverage, entertainment and a swimming pool - aren't up and running, then you are going to have a problem with dissatisfied guests," he told the Observer.

Mods there do more deleting than here, many are gone, but a few remain....

I noticed, but what can you expect it is after all a tourist board and one of the main contributors is a tour company?

It was the tour company that kept getting deleted and eventually TA banned him.

i was reading some of the comments on that board, too, ohliz, when you mentioned the discussions about Bahia Principe.

What I got from the posts was that Bahia Principe was supposed to be a 5 star place, but due to the unfinished nature of the construction, at best it's 3-star. Ppl who paid for a higher level of service were upset, it seems. I guess the owners wanted to make some money why they opened it on schedule (but with nuff work still left to do).

i was curious to note the comments about the man-made beach - it's not wearing well, is that true?

Someone reported that the sand is only about 6 inches deep over concrete, someone else said the road used to be there...not really sure. As you know artificial beaches are all over the north coast, esp around MoBay and Ochi it seems, with groynes to try to hold onto the sand. Maybe they didn't have time to put as much sand there as they plan to.

(one wonders, where did the sand come from? Rivers like the Yallahs?? Natural beaches like at Little Bay?)

I care less about whatever is up with their beach than the fact that the creation of said beaches and removal of the wetland that was there probably means the end of the reefs offshore, which is bad for long-run tourism, bad for fishermen, bad for the coast in storms, etc.

I THINK that pic was taken before New year's....but nothing would surprise me about that hotel.

Actually it is most likely from a construction gun. I own one a remington (it is the only gun I own). The crimped top of the cart is the give away unless it was a blank round.
