The Hon Edward Seaga will present the Caribbean International Network's (CIN) 2006 lecture at 7:00 pm, today, (Friday, October 20, 2006) at the Schomburg Centre for Research in Black Culture, 515 Malcolm X Blvd in Harlem, United States.

Edward Seaga; a noted scholar and a Distinguished Fellow of the University of the West Indies, will speak on the subject, "The Folk Roots of Jamaican Cultural Identity". As one of the founding fathers of the Jamaica Constitution in 1961, Seaga has continued to lead constitutional reforms and human rights protection for all Jamaicans. He has also been a life-long champion of the country's great influence on global culture in the areas of religion, literature, food, music and dance.

Stephen Hill, CIN's chief executive, created the lecture series three years ago to showcase the intellectual accomplishments of Caribbean peoples. He salutes Seaga as an unequalled authority on social issues and one of Jamaica's outstanding intellectuals.

For 13 years CIN has broadcast an extensive schedule of news, sports, drama and music programmes, exclusively for the rapidly growing and youthful Caribbean population. CIN can be seen on channel 73 in New York City.

Saw Seaga

So I went to see Seaga speak Friday nite as soon as I got back into town – literally raced to the hall with a friend right after I landed.

Good thing there were some long winded people promoting the heck out of themselves as otherwise, I’d have been late – I got there JUST as he took the stage.

It was an interesting speech, though nothing I didn’t really already know or common sense couldn’t tell you. Still, very interesting – glad I went.

All politics and bias aside, I must admit, I agreed with the first thing that came out of his mouth. He said that (economically/socially) “there are 2 Jamaicas.” He called it the “90% and the 10%”. He maintained that each know very little about the other. I really liked that he said this because – though this is obvious to most people, more & more, I’m finding many of my fellow Jamaicans are in denial regards this fact.

The other thing I found interesting – I was completely surprised to hear.

He explained that tourism only brings in the 3rd largest amount of money to the island. I knew that Foreign remittances is # 1 but I thought tourism was 2nd. He lists it as

#1 foreign remittance
#2 BAUXITE / ALUMINA
#3 tourism

Much as I thought I knew about tourism, this one really caught me off guard.

He spoke for a good long while and there was a brief Q&A at the end.

The hi lite of the nite for me was running into a former colleague of mine.

A British girl I used to work with about 7 years ago. I hadn't seen her in about 4 years. When she was a teenager, she lived in Trelawny for 6 months and 'fell in love' with the island. I'm all for loving Jamaica but let me just put it this way, you wouldn't be suprised if you ever saw her with a 'rent a dread'!

She's one of those who don't believe there's 2 Jamaicas. She seemed firm and fully intent on getting me to understand and believe that the crime rate in JA is rapidly plummeting.

I asked her how she could be so fiercely sure of this when she hasn't been or lived there since her teens.

She excused herself and went to the restroom.

I saw him when he was somewhat younger. Visited my school. Always combing his hair. Very petite man.
