When Trafigura scandal irrupted.. I made one comment on here... That the name was itching at the back of my mind.. I left it... Now it came back thanks to Mr Chang in the gleaner.. .It was in the Cote Du Ivore... And the dumping of waste.. My mind is aging badly... I then heard a report a couple months back as I was half asleep coving the dumping of refinary waste in West Africa and an enviromental impact...

I should have researched it when it itched... But is black man time now or is it black ooman time...????

I watch this subjetc ever since it became the new topic of destruction,and have waited and waited to see if any of you educated blacks would show even a slight sence that there is some objectivity and even at this juncture it is the same old same o.

Not one of the posters even stop to see that this is an international forum. where it is open for all to glean. Not one poster realize that just because they post that it is a scandal. It does not mean that international jurists is not ably to see through the dishonesty (because I have gone beyond seeing it as ignorance).
Every or most posters know that politicay parties are financed by private contributors. You also know that all those contribitions have been private. You also know that there is no restrictions against who the contributors are. You may not know that it includes those who have contracts with the government. Those seeking contracts with the government. Those who would like to see the opposition govern. aand those who woukld like to see the governing party re-elected.
It just so happen that Trafigura falls under one of those heading.
The opposition seize on it and with the help of the private sector using their control of the media,want to make it look as if this is a new paradigm.
I expected the uneducated to be awed and hypnotized with the thre ring circus they create. But I am really dumb-struck as to the reaction of those who are supposed to be the educated amongst us.
I remember saying that the private sector did not want to see Mrs Simpson-Miller become the leader of the PNP. It was My friend Wardoub,who stated that my statement has no merit. His defence was that the private sector will support who-ever they think will win.
I still maintain th eview that the private sector will do whatever it require to get rid of Mrs simpson- Miller,or any leader that will attempt to change the economic paradigm to open up the economy to all comers. That includesany leader in either political parties. They would also try to suppress Mr Charles if he had won against Mr golding too. It is all about keeping the status Quo. the same status quo that result in the majority of young black men with any drive to achieve to turn to the most devious means to make it.

The situation with ragashanti should be a lesson. It should be a lesson that if he was not see by them as being of the mind to help them become legal earners,he would have possibly done a 6 foot job .
They,theprivate sector don't care. they all have their visa and their foreign bank accounts. they are no different from Trafigura. They are all foreign business people using Jamaica just like a fishing ground.

yuh know when yuh live in it yuh sey a jus "so di ting set" is after you step back for a while yuh si di true inequities.
On anotehr board i used to get rediculed an ting whenever i bring up th eissue that the lack of respect for the people of jamaica but the national institutions is one of the primary causes of many of the problems in jamaica.

den when di lady tek over the first day she echo some of those sentiments..i thoguh maybe things going to start changing...but is back to business as usual.

anybody who bring up these issue is drowned out...so mi nuh expect dem to pay much attention to di colonel.

The great thing about this is to watch the Doc respond. You know that is scandal is hitting some nerves I don't know if the PNP will recover sufficiently...but then again it is the PNP and it is Jamaica. There will be another that will wash away the memories. Then with High from World Cup Cricket and Christmas it will be great time to just ease into an election.

Dear Reader,

It's not just my colleague contributors to this newspaper - Mark Wignall, Henley Morgan, Ken Chaplin, et al - whose columns have reflected the deep concerns and convictions about the Trafigura issue. It is just about everybody that I have spoken to since the "donation scandal" unfolded. Wignall is absolutely correct. Trafigura is by no means dead. In fact, it seems to be gaining more and more currency within the broader populace, as the days go by.

I am not sure that I can accurately put into words the sentiments that people are expressing, even those friends of mine who have been strong People's National Party supporters over the years. One young woman remarked: "When I think about the arrogant and contemptuous way the government is handling such a serious matter, my heart pounds in my chest as if it's going to drop out." An older gentleman expressed: "I have never felt in my gut such a deep feeling of hurt and anger as I have experienced, over this issue."

I'm sorry the Trafigura story cannot vanish as easily as the government would wish for it to happen. As for me, I have never felt such a sense of outrage. Everybody knows that we live in a country where the systems and structures are thoroughly corrupt and compromised. In fact, we have come to accept it as a normal way of life. What has offended and angered Jamaicans, however, is the blatant arrogance and contempt with which the matter has been dealt with by the government.

I don't think that those who lead us fully understand what happens when citizens believe that they are victims of injustice and contempt. The sentiments take on a life of their own, and there is no stopping it after that. It is the stuff that revolutions are made of. The feelings first take root in the physical body - that deep gut reaction - then it spreads and contaminates the country's body politic. It seems to me that the main reason the Trafigura affair has not generated widespread protest is because there is no credible leader to articulate and consolidate the sentiments and the energy of the people.

But it's not just the absence of leadership that is feeding the collective inertia. It is also that our people are battle-worn. They have been robbed of their sense of hope and energy by the oxygen thieves - those people and systems which suck the lifeblood from the people.

Oxygen thieves use a variety of strategies, the biggest being the weapon of fear. The banning of the press from a section of our Parliament is not merely a demonstration of unbridled power; it is tactic designed to create intimidation and fear. There are many ways to suck the life out of the free press - it's done all the time over the world.

First of all, you identify those journalists whom you consider to be "tame" and those who are clearly on your side. You then play the divide-and-rule game. You already know that the society is highly polarised, so it's relatively easy to play one against the other. When the divide-and-rule strategy pits the two major newspapers in our country against each other over an issue that ought to unite everybody, then you know that the oxygen thieves have perfected the art.

Our prime minister ought to have known before she took the job that, "uneasy lies the head that wears a crown", and that one of the qualifications for the job is that you need to possess the mental, if not physical attributes of "very broad shoulders". When I see the unrelenting battering that Prime Minister Tony Blair has taken from the British people, especially the press, and the onslaught that George Bush is experiencing about the administration's failed Iraq policy, Mrs Simpson Miller really has nothing to complain about. The Jamaican press is one of the wimpiest I have ever seen. Very few journalists do the homework necessary to engage our leaders in rigorous debates about national life, and most of them are afraid to pose tough questions to our leaders. The culture of the nine-day wonder is not a product of the masses. It is characteristic and symptomatic of a shallow and compromised media that finds it easier and less threatening to chase every new and potentially sensational story that contributes little or nothing to a deeper and more fuller understanding of the issues facing our country. It is my view that the media in Jamaica borders more on entertainment than it does on serious and in-depth journalism.

But even more disturbing than the media malaise is the general apathy of the people - actually one feeds into the other. It is clear that the oxygen is being sucked out of national life. Jamaicans just can't seem to find the courage and the energy to act, or even to react, and one of the main vanguards for change - the mass media - either doesn't understand its role or is prepared to acquiesce without a struggle.
