Time for Portia vs Bruce debate
I submit that the debate between the Prime Minister Portia Simpson-Miller and the leader of the Opposition Bruce Golding is imperative. This must not be one of rhetoric grandstanding or the continuation of issuing bogus promissory notes to the people. It must encompass depth, width, length and height to expose what are presented on the table.
If such a debate produces more grandstanding instead of substance, this would woefully short-change the electorate and mock the democratic process. Such an event must be communicated in simple layman’s language. The debate would engender and strengthen the knowledge base, an of course, knowledge is empowerment. What must be factored in the equation of the debate is that mostly we are an oral society — we do far less reading.
One should not subscribe to the apologists, the party fanatics or the genetically connected whose views are that the debate cannot put bread and butter on the table. This notion is the product of the infertile and bankrupt minds. Also, the supporters of the status of quo may want to see the ‘same difference’ rather than a paradigm shift and an application of dynamic ideas. Their minds are imprisoned inside the box.
It would be remiss not to mention the recent ‘Taking responsibility’ discourse on the Jamaican economy. This is laudable from the academic perspective, albeit questionable on certain analysis of the economy. It’s good that the intellectual have their say. However, Kingston is not Jamaica and it there should be efforts to reach out to the parish capitals.
