Policemen involved in controversial killing removed from front line duties
Two policemen who were involved in the controversial killing of two men in Glengoffe, St. Catherine Tuesday night have been removed from front line duties.
The development comes as the police launch an investigation into the killings, which allegedly resulted from an altercation involving one of the policemen and a man who was smoking a ganja spliff.
Those killed have been identified as 36-year-old Patrick Austin and 71-year-old Edward Morgan.
Wednesday morning, Head of the St. Catherine North Police Division, Superintendent Harry Daley, said personnel from the Police Commissioner’s office and several investigators moved through the community gathering information on the incident.
Superintendent Daley says residents and eyewitnesses are being encouraged to provide statements.
The atmosphere in the Glengoffe community has been tense since Tuesday night.
It is reported that shortly after 9 o'clock a police team was conducting an operation when Mr. Austin, a Rastafarian passed a derogatory remark while riding by on his bicycle.
He was reportedly challenged by a member of the police team who realized that he was smoking a spliff.
An argument reportedly developed and during the exchange, Mr. Austin was shot.
Mr. Morgan, who reportedly observed the altercation, was allegedly shot when he raised concerns about the shooting.
The incident sparked a massive demonstration as residents took to the streets to protest against the shooting.
Police personnel, who were in the area, had to make a hasty retreat after the demonstrators set fire to a service vehicle.
