Investigators probing reports that cop was among gunmen who fired at police in St. James



The Area One police are investigating allegations that a District Constable was among a group of men who engaged the police in a shoot-out in St. James Thursday evening.

The constable is in hospital nursing broken legs after he reportedly fell into a pit.

Reports are that about eight Thursday evening a group of men held up and robbed a taxi operator in Amity Hall.

The police were summoned and members of the police party were greeted with gun fire.

The police returned the fire and the men fled into bushes.

During a search of the area a man believed to be one of the gunmen was found in a pit with two guns.

The police later determined that he had a permit for one of the guns.

It was also discovered that the man was a member of the police force and was wearing a part of his uniform.

Assistant Commissioner of police in charge of Area One, Clifford Blake, confirmed on Friday afternoon that the policeman was held.

According to ACP Blake investigators are probing the allegation.

However ACP Blake said investigators are also checking the policeman's story that he was a passenger in the taxi when it was held up by the armed men.

ACP Blake says the cop claims that he managed to wrestle a firearm from one of the men.

The taxi operator has confirmed that the policeman was a passenger in the vehicle but has provided no further details.

The injured cop has been hospitalized under police guard.

The unsaked question,is Why has the police not been forthcoming with the number of incidences where police officers have been cauight murdering citizens in the commision of crimes in the country?
Is it because some of these crimes are actually overseen by the senior officers??
The police force need to have a really independent investigating commision. the memebers should be living and operating out of the Island. It should use 800 numbers that are answered off the Island,and the callers should be given real money as bounty of the heads of those criminals,the cases should be tried preferably out of the country in a court like a caribbean or regional court. we alsi need a regional police force with authority to investigate all the islands police forces. I am wagering that this level of criminality is not limited to the Jamaicanm police.
Any society that keep the general population unharmed,is a open invitation to armed criminals. All they have to do is to join the local police force,and organize from within.

MONTEGO BAY, St James - The Area One police have launched an investigation into allegations that a police constable was among a group of gunmen who held up and robbed a taxi operator in St James on Wednesday night.

The accused policeman has been admitted to hospital under police guard after he showed up at a hospital for medical treatment.

The cab operator was allegedly held up while travelling along the main road in Amity Hall, a deep rural community in St James, at approximately nine o'clock Wednesday night. The hold-up men, the police said, fled into the bushes after an alarm was raised about the robbery.

The accused policeman, whose name is being withheld pending further investigation, allegedly turned up at hospital with his legs broken shortly after the incident. Sources said he told his superiors that he was the victim of a robbery.

The Area One Police hierarchy was yesterday tightlipped on the matter, but Acting Commissioner of Police Clifford Blake told the Observer last night that he had ordered a probe into the incident.

"We are getting conflicting reports to what the policeman said happened, so I have directed Superintendent (Lynford) Gayle (Crime Chief for Area One) to be in charge of the investigations," ACP Blake said.

He added that he was "almost sure" that the Professional Standards Branch would also be called in to assist with the investigations.

There is a morphing of law enforcement and criminal networks on certain levels, and in certain respects.

However, as I'm against foreign cops doing jobs that could be done by qualified Jamaicans, a foreign court being Jamaica's final court of appeals, and a foreign head of state (though the last two are not the sources of Jamaica's problems) I don't consider it a wise idea that some foreign body is to have oversight authority for Jamaica's armed forces. I know sovereignty is over-rated, but this action would further erode whatever little sovereignty Jamaica has left. I would accept this idea only on the basis that Jamaicans are overwhelmingly and manifestly corrupt, and finding a few decent, fair minded citizens is searching for a needle in a haystack. This I cannot accept. I can't recall hearing this suggestion during the last last administration.

How hard is it to appoint a civilian board of competent individuals to investigate incidents like these, with the members duly protected, and with that committee given broad powers to summon witnesses and will have its decisions binding with all all the force of law as any comparable court in the judiciary? It would, effectively, be a court of law, only a special court for that reason.

If there is wider regional involvement, as the good doctor is suggesting, then a special body of Caricom (functioning with legal authority conferred on it by the member states) would investigate such matters. This body would not have powers to try suspected criminals, only to make a recommendation following which trial would take place in the respective countries. The alternative would be unacceptable because Jamaicans would be subjected to trial in an extra-national court of original jurisdiction.
