Rema attacked by gunmen from rival community

Tension is high in sections of the Kingston Western Police Division after about 30 heavily armed men attempted to invade the community of Wilton Gardens, popularly known as "Rema".
According to the police, the gunmen who were said to be from Tivoli Gardens, entered Rema Wednesday afternoon.

However, the men had to make a hasty retreat after they became engaged in a shoot-out with police and soldiers.

Commanding Officer for the Kingston Western Police Division, Superintendent Delroy Hewitt, says one of the gunmen was held and an illegal firearm seized.

It is reported that since the attempted invasion, Rema has become tense as residents are bracing for further attacks on the community.

Superintendent Hewitt says it has not been ascertained what triggered the latest unrest in the Division.

As a result, he says regular patrols will be maintained in Rema.

Police hold gunman after shoot out in Wilton Gardens

The police have charged the alleged gunman who was apprehended Wednesday during a shoot-out in Wilton Gardens or Rema.
According to Deputy Superintendent Hugh Bish of the Kingston Western Police Division, the man is 27-year-old Roger Oral Stewart, otherwise known as 'Cojack' of a Wellington Street address in Denham Town.

According to the police, the man was among nearly 30 armed men who entered Rema Wednesday afternoon.

However, the men had to make a hasty retreat after they were challenged by police and soldiers.

An illegal firearm was reportedly taken from Mr. Stewart.

I was wondering how long it would take RJR to clean up the news report. Of course Tivoli will not be implicated in any political violence. Not with Mr seaga out of the way now.

POLICE from the West Kingston Division yesterday maintained a heavy presence in Wilton Gardens, better known as "Rema", after preventing about 30 gunmen, whom they said were from neighbouring Tivoli Gardens, from entering the community to attack residents on Wednesday night.

"It is relatively quiet right now, but we are watching it; we just have to mobilise and put men on the ground to prevent a further escalation and to engage them like yesterday (Wednesday) if it becomes necessary," said Superintendent Delroy Hewitt, head of operations for the West Kingston Police Division.

The police, who held one of the alleged gunmen following a reported gunfight, said they prevented what could have been a 'night of bloodshed' in the inner-city community.
Hewitt told the Observer yesterday that while the police did not have the names of the men, they were "certain that they are members of the Tivoli Gardens Gang".

"They went into Rema, came back down on Little King Street, went into the May Pen Cemetery and headed over to Tivoli Gardens," said Hewitt. "It is reasonable that if they are not a part of a gang they could not go over there with the types of weapons they were seen with. We can, without any contradiction, say the men are part of the whole gang situation in the area."

In the meantime, he said while the police were not sure of the reason behind the planned attack on Rema, they believe it could have been in reprisal for the death of Joseph Lee on March 2.

"It is difficult to know what spurred them because this area is a very volatile area and anything can spark off anything, but from what we have been picking up on the ground, it was retaliation for his death and probably some old scores based on what we hear," Hewitt said.

[b]According to the police superintendent, information suggested that men who had broken away from the Denham Town-based Shooters Hill Gang, together with men from a gang in Rema, were accused of the death of Lee, and so his cronies went in search of the individuals, but were forced to retreat when security personnel engaged them in shoot-out.

The man held by the police following the alleged gun battle Wednesday night was yesterday identified as Roger Oral Stewart, a resident of Denham Town.
Stewart has been charged with illegal possession of firearm, but cops said they were sure whether he was wanted in connection with any other crime.

I don't doubt that they are gunmen in Tivoli and I don't doubt that they could find 30 armed men to go any place in Jamaica.

The problem is the police have not established that they were 30 men, that they were armed and that they came from Tivoli.
The one man that they reportedly held was from Denham Town.

Why didn't they engage these men?
If they knew the most likely route, why didn't they seal it off?

No,don't tell me that I am so nieve to believe that the best action is to defuse the war without any gunfight with either the police or civilians is not the way the police dealt with it?

How you know that the police knew beforehand the escape route the men would take?
Why do you believe that the police were really prepared for the fight and not just there as a part of the security strategy during the cricket matches?

Remember that elections are drawing near and the usual raid on Teevalli is due, Seaga or no Seaga.

Please learn to read and comprehend.

According to the report the police seemed to have mapped out the most likely route the men would take if they are coming or going from Tivoli.

Tivoli is a very small area, again why didn't the police try to cordon the area and get the men?

I really don't know what you are trying to get across, but they are a number of communities where you can get 30 armed men to go most places in Jamaica. Tivoli is one of them.

Question!
From the in the paper, have the police established that the man held, is any way shape or form connected with a Tivoli Gardens Gang Member(s) or are we left to assume that, (as you have obviously gone ahead and done)?

i have known people who travel from other sections of Kingston to TG and actually brag about their participation in some "raid" activities ..
i am not there to see with my own eyes .. so .. it's hearsay
but knowing these people .. I wouldn't doubt them ..

.... but knowing the police would you believe them?
Recently Tony Hewitt was implicated in the killings of some very young men from Jones town. One of the guys whose outtaview I had on tape told a very chilling story of how they were ambushed by Tony Hewitt and his gang.

The same Tony Hewitt was one of those cops that was put out of the force in the late 80s, I think, but I don't quite remember that he was implicated in some car scams.

It seems that there are some folks who are bent on getting TG war of some sorts. I think the killing of Zion Train is one example. They would kill a person aligned to TG knowing that there will be strong counteraction.

In this case nothing was proven one way or the other, but I have to say some might get what they wish. Either another blood bath of innocents in Tivoli or an Iraq style insurgency from Tivoli.
