The Police in St. Catherine South said they have cut down one of the major players in the guns-for-drugs trade who engaged them in a shoot-out in Lloyds Pen on Saturday. An illegal weapon was recovered in the operation.
Dead is Rodney Lee, 31, of the said community.
It is reported that at about 6:30 a.m., the police went into the community after receiving some information about Lee. The police allege that on their arrival in the community, Lee opened fire at them. After an ensuing gun battle, Lee was shot and killed. Investigators claimed that Lee was the don of the community and featured prominently in several cases of shooting, murders and robberies in the area.
"This man is the leader of a gang, and intelligence suggests that he was also involved in the drugs-for-guns trade and was armed and dangerous," a policeman said.
Residents of the area have a different view on the matter. They claimed that Lee was a godfather who was kind to them and that he was killed in cold blood.
Good person
"If them want mi son, them coulda come and take him, even shot him inna him foot and investigate the matter, they neva had to kill him. He was a good person and was not wanted," remarked Pauline Lee, mother of the deceased.
Several placard-bearing protesters from the community walked to the Gutters main road about two miles away and protested until they were addressed by the police.
The Bureau of Special Investigation has commenced a probe into the matter.
