Dear All
A moment for your indulgence.
I was listening to my IPOD and my daily reflections of Perkins On Line and my IPOD reminded me of 1 year of recordings since the Prime Minister came in. Since that day on 30th March 2006 - I can't help but feel disappointed in the current performance after listening to a years different perspectives and I don't even live in Jamaica - but for those that do, I sense that whilst there is hope - there is currently no vision and increasing frustration and pressure except of you are pretty wealthy.
The issue of finance - I really do think the administration have run out of steam on this one altogether and the service of debt holds back progress. I have to say that the economy does not look as resilient and there needs to be imagination that benefits. I sense a further time of austerity for whoever gets the next term in office whatever party.
Human rights - I cannot even go there! We all know the score and someof us know that we cannot discern between criminality and law abidance
The Cricket World Cup - I have to say that this was hoping to be a feel good factor but seems to have been an expensive mistake that someone is paying for! Great we can put on a show for the world/drop an event but those who cannot afford tickets must be asking the question - what is this all about and what are the benefits. Anyone with sense have seen what major sporting events do and the long term benefits are hard to see and very few make the conversion and most of these events are in developed countries with economies that can take a few hits.
Now onto the PM - I have to ask what her solid achievements have been. I have to say nice lady that she seems - she is not being advised very well or is not taking the advice - where is the former prime ministers promise?
In this media savvy age she needs to understand that it is not just how it looks within but without and I am afraid the conversation about her travel expenses and her confronting the media was just a sad day. I winced in every way for her not because she is from country origins but because what she was saying was irrelevent to the issue. Being offscript was not good and purely on that moment alone she really played into some of her detractors in the run up of the party's leadership and confirmed their utterances (I am not in sympathy - just an observation).
Her cabinet are in disarray and I cannot understand where any form of opposition is coming from just from a political sense. I remember people saying - it's the economy stupid! Boy if an oposition parties cannot capitalise from what is going on then it is sad!
I have to say that the Highway 2000 contract is something that I think will go down as a watershed in many ways and show the lack of robustness and economic planning and development. The Portmore toll road has been a cynical and blatant blow to civic accountability and governance. I would be furious if I were a resident of Portmore being taxed to go in and out of where I live due to government selling me out in such a way as chattel and a beast of economic burden.
In closing, I am very afraid of what I see and I am afraid that the PM as popular a person as she might be - needs to go to the country to see whether she can get a (wo)mandate to begin to rectify some key problems. This will take a generation but I hope that some of this can be rectified with a proper vision. The speech at Kings House seems irrelevant and there doesn't seem a working together - its everbody for themselves. If you are poor, young and old - you are in a predicament.
I am not sure this administration has run out of steam but neither am I certain anybody else whats to begin the task of fixing the mess.
Anyway - there are more eloquent people on this board. Has the Prime Minister got what it takes bar the rhetoric and just on the record to deliver - The people of Jamaica will decide.
It's hard not to be disappointed and sometimes I don't know whether to laugh or cry.
