Monday, April 09, 2007
Dear Editor,
How wonderfully vivid and veracious is your cartoon of April 4 showing the prime minister celebrating and eating an anniversary cake while the serious business of governing goes unattended. I have long been under the impression that this government is more concerned with frills and froth than with substance. They have no understanding of what business is all about. Rather than create conditions for growth and development, they are forever finding ways and means to stifle the productivity of entrepreneurs, impose burdensome taxes upon them and then demand a big slice of their profits (but not their losses), with the alternative of prosecution and/or imprisonment.
Look at how the minister of finance carelessly approved the expenditure of $9-billion on Cricket World Cup; and afterwards coming to us to say that he didn't know it was not going to result in a decent share of the income. Now he thinks the courts might have to decide if he had done a foolish thing. Is this the way he would have handled his personal funds?
The whole mess reveals the idiotic approach of Caricom governments who, under Mr Patterson's leadership, jumped into this carnival of cricket without first counting the cost. Now that Jamaicans are left with a lion's share of the bill, PJ is appointed a consultant to help improve West Indies cricket, Dr Davies is wondering how he came to be bamboozled and the prime minister is busy eating cake and talking with her mouth full.
Let her eat cake but be also mindful of the fate of Queen Marie-Antoinette who recommended cake when the people wanted bread.
