After failing to prove beyond doubt that Bob Woolmer had been murdered, the Jamaican Police now believe that the autopsy report by an Indian pathologist misled them and the cricket coach probably died of natural causes, according to the British media.

'The Sunday Times' claimed that the role of Kingston pathologist Ere Sheshaiah is now being questioned after a review of his post-mortem report suggested that he was wrong to suggest that Woolmer had died of manual strangulation.

The daily quoted an unidentified senior Jamaican Police officer admitting that Woolmer probably died from heart attack.

"I would go for natural causes," he said.

Jamaican Police are awaiting the result of a toxicology test to find out if Woolmer was poisoned with a herbicide.

Sheshaiah, an Indian who moved to Jamaica about 12 years ago, based his report on two major findings-Woolmer's fractured bone in the neck and three bruises inside neck and a large one at the base of the tongue.

Dr Nat Carey, a noted British pathologist, however, was not convinced. He dismissed the strangulation theory, saying such hyoid fractures could be caused by a fall, resuscitation or poor autopsy technique.

"It is an important thing that just as one swallow doesn`t make a summer, so a fractured hyoid doesn't make strangulation. That is the very heart of the case," Carey said.

Jamaican police have now approached the FBI to find a third pathologist to shed light on the issue.

A friend of mine calls me the patron saint of bad decisions. But all the bloopers I've made in my lifetime are looking very pale in comparison to the events that have plagued the police top brass in recent weeks.

A certain inspector who has more reports against him than a troubled juvenile has caused the top brass of the force to look rather foolish. I wasn't present when the powers that be in the force decided to promote this policeman to inspector; but, I'm fairly certain they are removing their hair from the very roots right now in light of his participation in the Dr. Ford beating.

Loyalty

Having chastised the top brass for their apparent foolhardiness, a word or two can be said about loyalty. The top cops were loyal to him by entrusting him with greater responsibility and how did he reward them? Exactly! Whatever your character or behaviour, shouldn't the fact that you were chosen over others who might have deserved it more act as a deterrent to behaving badly? Suppose not.

And in a related police story (this one not an uplifting one either), a witness has to go into protective custody because she has a case against who? A policeman! The mere fact that the need for protective custody is deemed necessary is very sad.

Latest twist

And what about the latest twist with the Bob Woolmer case? If Scotland Yard is right, then it wasn't murder at all and some people are already snickering at Mark Shields and his boys. In all fairness to them, they only went by what the pathologist told them. But I can see why they might not look like the most proficient unit in the eyes of the international media.

It all adds up to the notion that the local peacekeepers do not carry the same stigma of police of old. What ever happened to the days when police work was seen as a noble profession and not one to enter just because you couldn't get anything else? What percentage of recruits in the past 10 years grew up really wanting to be police officers?

It's not all their fault mind you. The society they police is in no way as serene as that of their predecessors. The 'bad guys' guns have become bigger, their methods have become more devious and their targets are getting younger in age.

Yes, our police are in a war and we salute the ones who are still fighting it the way they are supposed to. But, as with other sectors of society, a few bad apples are messing it up for the rest of them.

Pure tragedy.

The thing is though for Jamaican policing to be "up to code," EVERYTHING must change. So yes, the whole world can see what 'really happens' just following this story. Now we ALL know why so few murders are solved in Jamaica.

I'm sorry to see that Mrs Woolmer believes that Bob was murdered. That is a shame.

I think that the opening scene, Bob's room, was horrific death scene, and complicated. Also, the opening scene is further complicated by Pakistan's shocking losses in the World Cup (that had just happened), and then add to that the World Cup itself, and the drama and extenuating circumstances of all of those high powered people, who were in Jamaica for this great event, and the different languages, the extreme emotions. And then Bob is found dead in a room that no one even wanted to go into.

No need for any big conspiracy theory, this is an excellent study in culture and the role it plays in our daily life.
The Jamaican State has a history is incompetence, which is most evident in the way the Security and Investigative Bureaucracy operates.

It does not matter if the principals are local born or foreign sourced operatives, as in the case of the Quack Pathologist and Keystone Shields.
When you add them to the culture that permeates the incompetent State of Jamaica, this is the expected result.

British newspaper The Daily Mail reports police now believe the 58-year-old Woolmer died of heart failure and are set to make an announcement.

Woolmer was found unconscious in his Kingston hotel room on March 18 after the Pakistan national team he led lost to Ireland in a major upset at the World Cup.

A Jamaican pathologist initially called the cause of death inconclusive, but four days later ruled that Woolmer was strangled.

The Mail cited an unidentified colleague of Mark Shields, Jamaica's top officer on the case, blaming the former Scotland Yard investigator for the confusion over the death and said he should have ordered a second post-mortem.

"It's enormously embarrassing," the colleague said. "Instead of saying the death was suspicious, he rushed out a statement saying it was murder. He is going to be a laughing stock."

Fans and media speculated that Woolmer had possibly uncovered a match-fixing scam or had been targeted by Pakistan fans incensed at their team's performance.

Police to release official report on Woolmer investigation

The world will hear next week what was the real cause of death of former Pakistani Cricket Coach Bob Woolmer.

RJR News has been informed that a press conference will be held on Tuesday morning at 10 o'clock during which an official report will be made on the three month old, high profile case.

The press conference will be led by Police Commissioner Lucius Thomas.

Commissioner Thomas will read a statement outlining the results of post mortems, toxicology tests and other investigations conducted into Mr. Woolmer's death.

According to information received by our news centre, the Police High Command has received four detailed reports on the outcome of the probe.

Mr. Woolmer was pronounced dead at the University Hospital shortly after he was found unconscious in his room at the Jamaica Pegasus Hotel on March 18.

Local investigators announced that he had been murdered.

However, in recent weeks, international media reports have surfaced that tests done in Britain showed that Mr. Woolmer died of natural causes.

Local police officials have remained tight lipped on news reports that the Force could face legal action from members of the Pakistani Cricket team over its treatment of the death of its former Coach.

The Associated Press Saturday quoted the Spokesman of Pakistan's World Cup team Pervez Mir as saying that the country and its cricketers have been maligned.

During the investigation three Pakistani team members including Captain Inzamam-ul-Haq were fingerprinted and their DNA taken.

Mr. Mir said those actions along with repeated statements from investigators that Mr. Woolmer was strangled fed speculation that team members were involved.

Jamaican police said they are analyzing new information in the death of Pakistan cricket coach Bob Woolmer but declined to address reports that he was not murdered and died of natural causes.

Breaking a long silence about the high-profile case, Police Commissioner Lucius Thomas said on Wednesday that investigators would make a formal statement on Woolmer's death after reviewing the new information but did say when.

"We are in receipt of some material. We are studying it and we will make a statement shortly to address the whole issue of Bob Woolmer," Thomas told reporters in Jamaica's capital of Kingston.

Thomas declined to elaborate on the information or say whether investigators are still treating Woolmer's death as a homicide.

British newspaper The Daily Mail reported on Saturday that police now believe the 58-year-old died of heart failure and are set to make an announcement.

In a sensation news channel report, Bob Woolmer's long time friend and former South African captain Clive Rice alleged that Bob Woolmer death report was a cover up and that he did not die of a heart attack. Rice also said that there is now a fear factor involved for all cricket players and coaches.

Stating some hair-raising facts, Rice said, "If poison was involved then how can it be a natural death."

Raising doubts on the contradicting pathologist report, Rice mentioned, "Bruises could not be because of pathologist's examination. You cannot bruise when you are all dead and blood stops. And if the death was natural, the pathologist would have known."

He hinted that if the bookies were involved then "they can even get to the police".

After stating all his facts he concluded that if the truth will not be revealed then all players and coaches in cricket fraternity are vulnerable to such an incident.

Director of Public Prosecutions Kent Pantry says he will be taking a closer look at the evidence presented by the police at the Coroner's Inquest into the death of Pakistan cricket coach Bob Woolmer after the 11 member jury returned an open verdict.

The verdict means that after sifting through the evidence, they were unable to state definitively how Mr. Woolmer died.

<span style='font-size: 17pt'>The jury foreman in an interview with RJR News said the Inquest had exposed weaknesses in the police investigation into the death of the Pakistan Coach.</span>

Mr. Pantry says he was not surprised by the foreman's response.

He said he questioned several of the investigators on things that should have been done and the answers he received, supported the foreman's statement.

<span style='font-size: 17pt'>And lead investigator in the Bob Woolmer case Deputy Commissioner of Police Mark Shields, is insisting the police have nothing to be embarrassed about concerning how the probe was conducted.</span>
