what exactly is it that qualifies the honarable portia simpson-miller to be pm of jamaica?......

is she the best & brightest jamaica has to offer?......

but then i know politics makes no sense....look at politics in the usa. big sigh.....

No. Not even close. But then, one need not be bright to lead Jamaica. The Jamaican political leadership, like that of many other countries, is not an elite of merit. Anyone who can whip up popular support and transform it into an electoral majority can be PM. Michael Manley did it twice. Portia has done it within the PNP. Can she do that for her party to win a general election? We shall see.

Whenever there is a leadership contest within the PNP, the populist wing beats the intellectual wing everytime. Portia comes from the former. Manley and PJ were able to consolidate those two wings. When I say "two wings" this doesn't mean that there aren't 'smart' people in the populist wing. Of course, there are - only, Portia is not one of them. She is in way over her head - another reminder that effective political leadership in the 21st century really requires sound intellect. GWB is another example. And it doesn't matter how bright your advisers are because ultimately, it's the leader who decides.

Anyway, it matters little to me whether - in the PNP - it's the populists or the smug intellectuals who are in charge; Jamaica will still be shafted.

Prime Minister of Jamaica urges graduates of alma mater to pursue excellence

Prime Minister Portia Simpson Miller has urged graduates of her Miami, Florida-based alma mater to strive for excellence and to set no limits in pursuit of their goals.

The Prime Minister, who was the guest speaker at the Union Institute and University's commencement exercise held last Sunday at the Westin Diplomat Hotel in Hollywood, Florida, told the 70 graduates that they were now equipped with the primary tools of knowledge and self-development, which would em-power and enable them to shape a brighter future.

Guided by purpose

"We were all equipped to be winners each with our different talents, skills and experiences, and we do not have to be stopped by challenges," she stated.

The Prime Minister said that, in pursuit of excellence, they must be guided by purpose and passion and leave a "legacy that would make the world a loving and better place".

Noting some of the factors contributing to the degradation of the society, Mrs. Simpson Miller told her audience that elevating the qualities of caring and compassion, and pooling positive energies would create more wholesome communities.

Expanded her horizons

The Prime Minister paid tribute to the institution for preparing her to expand her horizons and strengthen her capacity as a leader, and provide other adult students with the opportunity to enrich their knowledge base while pursing their careers goals.

She further shared with the graduates of the university, which caters to adult learners, the joy of embarking upon higher education as a mature person, noting that the experience had created appreciation for the application of knowledge through life's experiences.

Prior to the graduation ceremony, the Prime Minister was guest at a luncheon in her honour at the same venue.

Honorary degree

The Prime Minister holds a bachelor's degree in public administration from the university, in addition to an hono-rary degree in recognition of her "enduring efforts to improve the quality of life for all Jamaican citizens, regardless of race, class, colour of creed".

Dat must have been when she was minister of local govt. when contactors were given 6 months fuel each month for their trucks and in turn fixed free of cost by the tax payers when in desrepair and paid still even when they were not in function all this according to Harry whatshisname of St. Mary East and present Jnr. minister in the said ministry.
