I am for a Change so my donation is going <span style='font-size: 14pt'><span style="color: #009900">Green</span></span>.

In fact this morning before I opened my email I was wondering if I should become a member of the JLP. The only problem is the JLP don't have one lick of Propaganda….err Communication skillz.... trust mi if the PNP was in Opposition you would see something different.
I looked @ their Web Site and only two MP/Candidates have WebSites.
Man I could run their whole Communication Campaign for them for free and do a much better job.
I was surprised that they remembered that I emailed them about Mr. Golding’s visit to Atl and put me on their begging list.

Orange shut disappointed in the PNP will be voting for the bell.

The history of the JLP is no better than that of its partner-in-crime the PNP.

Vote one party in until you get tired of the corruption, scandals and no progress and then vote the other in until you get tired of the corruption, scandals and lack of progress ad infinitum.

I wish to credit an unknown poster in another forum who signs off by writing:

"Stupidity is trying the same thing over and over and expecting different results."

Until the people of Jamaica can NOMINATE, elect and have the mechanisms to hold responsible their elected representatives in regularly scheduled accountability sessions, nothing can or will change.

You will all get your 30 seconds of democracy when you cast your ballot for the acceptable candidates that the twin parties have chosen for you and then you can go home and complain until the next election when you will get your next 30 seconds worth of "democracy" .

Or am I missing something?

The JLP having historically been marginalized in the local and International Official Press should be the first ones to embrace the largely free electronic press.

In this case so long as everyone is on the same page, more means more and not a dilution.

Every JLP Politicians should have a:

BLOG
@ Least a Monthly PodCast...weekly in the last three months of an election and daily after the date is announced.
Email
IM
SKYPE

The JLP itself should have any active forum for all comers
A PodCast updated weekly
A BLOG
SKYPE Local numbers in Cities (especially Europe) where Jamaicans number in the hundreds.

The JLP need to attack the big Three in the PNP, focus on the STATE of their Constituencies and Ministry Portfolio and in the case of the Dr. Clueless and Sistah P. their stewardship of the country.

I have come up with a little skit I will offer it to the JLP for free!

It takes place @ a Gas Station called CCC, (for Constant Corruption Corporation). It features oversized Petrol Pumps.
An Electronic Grid with the price of each grade of fuel per liter displayed.
Vehicles fill up @ a three array, Corruption Pump
There are three grades of Petrol to choose from.<ul>[*]Low-grade corruption where a white Toyota Corolla pulls up and dispenses from the $87Mil per Liter from low-grade pump. The License Plate reads Cawna Man.[*]Mid-Grade corruption follows the said routine but this time the corruption petrol is being pumped into an Escalade, the license plate reads Genetically Linked.[*]The story continues only this time it is High Grade Corruption been dispensed and into a Boeing 777-300 JET painted in the National Colours.[/list]

All while the prices per liter of the Corruption Fuel is steadily inching up, even as the customers are dispensing it in their vehicles.

The People's National Party (PNP) is set to announce former Miss World, Lisa Hanna, as its candidate to replace Aloun Assamba in South East St. Ann, Prime Minister Portia Simpson Miller revealed on Monday.

In what was described as "a very stormy meeting" at the PNP's Old Hope Road, St. Andrew, headquarters, on Monday night, Mrs. Simpson Miller told the four declared contenders who had been vying to replace Mrs. Assamba that the party had decided not to endorse any of their candidacies and would be going with Ms. Hanna.

The audience, which also included members of the South East St. Ann executive, was, however, far from amused, telling the Prime Minister that the people in the constituency would in no way support such a decision.

Former South East St. Ann Member of Parliament and elder PNP statesman Ambassador Seymour Mullings, in calling the announcement "a dark day in the history of South East St. Ann", said it was a mistake to impose a candidate on the people in the constituency without taking their views into consideration.

Could hardly contain anger

The Prime Minister herself could hardly contain her anger, at one point telling the far from docile gathering: "If the party should lose South East St. Ann and the election as a result, the wrath of the country will come down on South East St. Ann."

Contacted yesterday, Mr. Mullings said he was stunned at what had transpired, adding that, "I just couldn't believe what I was hearing at that meeting".

"I was the Member of Parliament there for 32 years and it was no secret that I supported the candidacy of Sheree Brown-McDonald," he said. "In every poll and sounding the party has done in the constituency she comes out way ahead of the other contenders. It is always wise to respect the wishes of the people and I am afraid that the way this was done might not go over well with the people of South East St. Ann."

Visits to sections of the constituency by The Gleaner yesterday brought fully into focus the concerns raised by Mr. Mullings.

"Our Prime Minister seems to trust JLP people more than she trusts her own comrades," commented Jean Gayle, Claremont resident. "She has Norman Horne running in St. Elizabeth, Abe Dabdoub in West Portland, Ian Hayles somewhere down the country and now this Lisa Hanna girl."

Clover Gordon, a Bensonton resident, was equally dismissive of the Hanna announcement. "I doubt if Lisa Hanna knows where to find South East St. Ann," she said. "We will never accept her down here and if we are forced to choose between two Labourites, we will give Mr. Fakhourie, a hometown boy, our votes." Peter Fakhourie is the JLP candidate for South East St. Ann.

Ms. Hanna was the third Jamaican to win the Miss World title. She won the title in 1993 in Sun City, South Africa, at 18 years old. She was formerly married to businessman and ex-JLP Senator David Panton.

This also shows the lack of democracy in the Jamaican two-party system. It is no different in the USA. or in any other multi party system of representative democracy.

How can it be called a democracy if the people do not have any say in who will be their representative?

In this case even party members are being overridden by the party hierarchy which removes the choice of candidates even further from the electorate.

So, on election day you get to vote for someone chosen for you by someone way up in the power structure on the PNP side or for someone chosen by JLP party on the other side.

Neither party would ever nominate anyone who is not in lockstep with party policies and/or who is a threat to the status quo.

So you go to the polls and vote, hoping against hope for change that not only will not come but cannot come because the candidates handpicked by both parties were picked BECAUSE they are not for serious change.

My philosophical foes in the fora hate it when I bring this up but Cuba does lead the way in showing how democracy CAN work in choosing candidates for representative.
In Cuba, the electorate is broken up into areas much as in any representaive democracy. When it comes time for a scheduled election, most of an areas voters meet in a massive assembly. THEY, the assembled voters are asked to nominate candidates from among them to be their representative in the Municipal Assembly.
Anyone can be nominated but NO parties including the Cuban Communist Party (which is mainly the group that deals with the socialist economic system) are allowed to run candidates although a member of the PCC can run as an individual.
One person is needed to nominate someone and one other is needed to second the nomination. That's it. That nominated person goes on the ballot. The process continues until there are no more nominees. Their names pictures, biographies, associations, schooling etc are posted in a central area for all to see and read.
No campaigning is allowed and it is not really necessary since the candidates are known to the people in that voting area. This cuts out the corrupting campaign contributions so common in multi-party elections in the United States and elsewhere where money can easily buy an election via newspaper, TV and radio ads.

Once elected the representative must report back to that assembly of voters every six months to tell them what they've been up to and at this meeting they can be booted out if they are not performing satisfactorily . This is done by a simple show of hands. Needless to say, simply because this removal mechanism exists, those elected almost always do what those who elect them want and removal is a rare occurence.

Think about it. Really think about it. Wouldn't the Cuban system be a whole lot better and far more democratic than what we have in Jamaica and the U.S.

I did a little research: The JLP now has a majority of the 237 parish council seats (55.3% to the PNP 44.7%). It has more councillors in all parishes except Westmoreland and the Portmore Municipality. All parish capitals, except Westmoreland, now have JLP mayors. The Portmore Municipality also has a PNP mayor. That's 12:2. For those who may not be aware, the Portmore Municipality is now the 14th entity. Now I'm aware that Portmore is a major population center in which the PNP remains dominant. But that area is not enough, all things being equal (and remaining the same), to offset the JLP's lead at the local government level.

So here are my questions:
As the PNP viewed its victory in the 1986 (or 1987?) local government election as the difinitive evidence of a shift in popular support towards the PNP, and would go on to win the general elections in 1989, can the JLP use its dominance at the local government level as a evidence of growing popular support for the JLP?

Is there real evidence of a slip in support for the JLP at the local government level? ( I note that the JLP is disputing the last poll. Are those polls credible?)

If not, is the JLP lead at the local government level an indication of better grassroots mobilization than in previous years?

Yes and no. The PNP is very good or was very good at neutralizing and correcting a deficiency when it comes to popular support.
They have effectively watered down effects of the JLP Parish Councils dominance by starving the Councils of funds, siphoning off key employees and dragging out both the Parish Council Elections and the General Polls.

Recently they have tried another poloy, that of accusing certain councils of fiscal imprudence, using that as an excuse to audit the councils and to force their version of so-called Local Government Reform.
It is my guess that GOJ will use the LGR to strip the councils of the most lucrative items in their portfolios (something they accused the JLP of doing in the 80s), while trying to neutralize the grass roots support by hold direct elections for Mayors of major municipalities, which could be sympathetic to its cause.

Theoretically this is all good, I think the implantation is fraught with dangers and pitfalls that has caused them not to go to fast with their plans.

I don't think there is a retreat from the JLP at the level of the Parish Councils. I think the support was genuine and the folks of the towns and villages were pleasantly surprised when things started to work in a fashion that they had never seen in years.

Like I said the PNP Government, in its scorched the earth tactics to win elections @ all costs have virtually brought services @ the Local Government to a halt. The problem is this has not only affected Labourites (who expect and receive bad treatment), but comrades who are wondering why their government is in power but they are not getting their garbage or their roads taken care of in a timely fashion.

I know the machiavellian political machinery of the PNP will pull all stops to remain in power, by any means neccesary. Given all that is at stake, I wonder if the JLP can beat back this machinery. There is a ruthless streak in Carl Samuda, but is it enough. We will see.

Well the JLP had a grand opportunity to put this beyond the reach of the PNP since 2002 when they won most of the councils.
One of the greatest damage to the PNP is to publicize especially abroad what is really taking place in Jamaica.

The JLP has unwittingly or otherwise colluded with the PNP to hold it dung. They have used language such as bipartisan, consensus, moving away from tribalism, patriotism and nationalism to mean support for the PNP.
The JLP has effectively been kept in check, because to oppose meant to be an unpatriotic tribalist.

What the JLP needed to do was to cultivate resources local and foreign that were not necessarily party related, but would help them get out truth.
Just imagine if the all the candidates have their own websites, own public information desk. This would fracture the PNP Spinners and forcing them to have to monitor nearly a 100 unique sources instead of the 1 or 2 that might be seen a pro-JLP and a possible threat to them.

Of course the fractious state of the pre-Golding led JLP was a serious threat to any kind of proper media and communication protocol.

Now the JLP seems willing to go on the offensive against the Portia Simpson Led PNP, but they are still not using all the tools @ their disposal.

My contention is:
If all the Comrades come out and all the Labourites come out to vote, the PNP will still win.
So the JLP needs to stop talking to their supporters. Start talking to Jamaica. To win they need convince the unconvinced to head to the polls.

What more can the PNP do to lose the elections?

Is only this woman thing making Portia the only hope.

But if she`s going to go on like a teg-ah-reg like she is at party HQ over SE St. Ann, there will be no hope.

Bruce and the hierarchy for what is at stake, do seem to sound a little low down in Volume and scanty on quality.
Bruce is basically feeding on the bloops and blunders of the PNP.
