Winnifred Beach Fights On part 1
If you aren't familiar with Winnifred Beach, in Portland,JA, and its struggle to prevent a big development and the subsequent privatization of the beach, this is the latest from the Winnifred Beach Defence Committee via Maria Carla. To all of you, anywhere in the world, who have either been to Winnifred or who share in the belief that the natural assets of a country should not be made inaccessible to the ordinary people of that country, please sign the petition. It will be used by the Defence Committee as additional leverage in the struggle to keep this wonderful little beach open to the people of Fairy Hill and Portland Parish as well as to visitors.

And it will be interesting to see the reaction from the government who seem to believe that the poorer people of the country don't really count and that all foreign visitors really want "development" that changes all the natural places in the country into "venues" and "attractions".

Reach Falls succumbed to the Govt. agency UDC. The people of the area resisted for as long as they could.

Winifred`s Beach, the people are holding out for as long as they can too. Until a restraining order is obtained from the court, the UDC will sooner or later win.

But they have Reach Falls and not doing anything with it. When I went there two years ago it was overtaken by flora and we had to park on that narrow "road" coming up the hill and were escorted onto the property by locals who of course we had to squeeze off a smalls on.

Wasn`t it closed 2 years ago? Caught up in the fight for control between the citizens and the enemy, the UDC/ Govt. of Jamaica?

Reach Falls opened this Spring:
* $660 JA for visitors.
* Closed on Mon. & Tues.
* No jumping off the top.
* No swimming past the newly-installed buoys and marker lines, therefor no swimming into the little "cave" under the falls.
* No climbing up the side of the falls and swimming/walking upstream to the spring.
* No going down stream within the venue confines.
* Vendors in the old parking lot are ousted.
But eventually, they will build "walkways" along the upper stream and add a restaurant and the whole this will be made into a proper "attraction". Oh, happy day. When will someone "get" the idea that not all of us WANT "developed" spaces!!?? The whole thing breaks my heart.

Q3210, don't bet on it this time... and have you signed the petition? This little "David" bunch has shown a tenacity and persistence that has to be admired and supported. And if this court case is successful it will set a precedent.

In any event, shouldn't you and others be supporting the concept of pubic beach access for the people of the country?

What about one to get rid of the Government?
I actually know this area a little bit. A very nice lady who I had a long relationship has a house in the scheme @ Fairy Hill. I spent a few weekends there.

Were there any mishaps that you are aware of that took place by diving and swimming and climbing at Reach Falls?

These people, the UDC come and have hijacked the fun out of the place in no uncertain manner.

I'm not aware of any accidents at Reach but there could have been. But actually, not many people jump off the 20-25 ft. height. There were lifeguards there whenever we went wnd they were good at monitoring the jumpers. ( Makes for bad tips if there is a problem._ Most common problem was usually loss of, or serious re-arrangement of, bathing suits... A two-piece suit usually becomes a thong and a bandanna......
