Prime Minister urges US to assist with regional crime
Prime Minister Portia Simpson Miller is urging the United States to assist Jamaica and the region in the fight against crime and violence.
She made the plea while addressing delegates at the conference on the Caribbean that opened in Washington DC Tuesday.
The Prime Minister wants more powerful countries to do more than just provide additional assistance in fighting crime and stemming the illegal importation of guns.
“The CARICOM region does not manufacture guns, yet we are flooded with guns and ammunition which worsens our situation of crime and violence. And then we hear the talk about ‘oh those country’s are so violent, oh that county’s crime’. We do not manufacture guns in our region. This is an area that demands further action,” said Prime Minister Simpson Miller.
She noted that the situation is made worse with the influx of deportees.
“The situation is made worse by criminal deportation and deportation of persons who left the region when they were babies and where not socialized by the region and so in a global environment, I pause here to say and I think this is a fair request from countries deporting people back to our region,” she said.
