Carey Knight, the man who was charged with slapping Member of Parliament K.D. Knight, was given a one-year suspended sentence when he appeared in the Linstead Resident Magistrate's Court on assault charges on Monday.
Knight, 25, of no fixed address, was sentenced by RM Bahsti Chatoor following his guilty plea for the June 24 incident.
The court heard that his psychiatric evaluation report said that he was fit to plead, after which he was sentenced.

Although the sentence is suspended, Knight was remanded until June 25. By then, the police is expected to establish if he has a steady place of abode.
When he appeared, the complainant K.D. Knight begged the judge not to impose a custodial sentence, but to sentence the accused man so that he can benefit from treatment. The judge acceded to his request.
His appearance in court follows an incident in which the Member of Parliament was speaking at a People's National Party gathering in Bog Walk. The accused calmly walked on the stage, slapped the Member of Parliament, and was subsequently charged by the police.
