Patient beaten, left untreated, at Kingston Public Hospital
Employees of the Kingston Public Hospital (KPH) and members of the Lamasa Group (a company which provides janitorial services) assigned to the institution assaulted an injured patient in the presence of a member of the RJR News team Saturday night.
The man with bloodied bandages all over his face was literally kicked out of the hospital by one of his attackers as security personnel and other workers shouted their support.
The man came into the Assessment area clearly angry.
Ranting, he took out his Blue Cross Health card and demanded immediate attention.
The cause of his fury was unclear.
As the patient vented, a gesticulating male staff member accosted and threatened him.
This precipitated a heated argument.
At least five young men attired in full blue took on the man as others looked on.
Attempts to separate the man from the attacking staff members were futile as they unleashed blows and dragged him outside the Assessment Department before kicking him to the pavement.
During the melee, the patient left behind his health card with the name Hepburn Hutchinson.
A female staff member threatened to report the Assessment Officer on duty because we had seized the opportunity to examine the health card.
Persons who claim to frequent KPH, including taxi operators, say assaults on injured patients have become a regular occurrence.
But nothing is being done about it.
Recently, a person assigned to the Assessment Department complained bitterly that she had witnessed an assault by a member of the security team on an elderly patient who complained about deficiencies in the system.
But the security guard remains on duty.
