Note: I have a series of questions for you all-knowing ones in this forum. I will admit up front that I dont know a great deal about Jamaican politics but I want to understand a few things. Now, if you want to answer my questions that great, but please dont nyam off my head 'cause I asked a simpletons question. We all need to start somewhere. Tanx.
Now, I just finished reading Rachel Manley's memoir, Drumblair.
(I had no real agenda in buying the book other than it was on sale for 3.99)
In one chapter, she spoke of the Federation movement her grand-father was trying to build just prior to Jamaica's independence in '62.
I did not know that N. Manley tried to organize the Caribbean islands into a federation in the late '50's.
My qestion is: for those who were around during this time, what were your thoughts about a Federated West Indies?
It strikes me as odd that he would pursue federation at a time that many islands were fighting for independence, including Jamaica, and had not a chance to establish their internal autonomy. Who would want to share or give up power to another outside entity at this nebulous point.
Since his idea was defeated in a referendum prior to calling an election, do you feel it could have made a difference to his election results if he hadnt called the referendum first? It seems like Busta used this against Manley to defeat him in the polls.
If Manley, had one the election, do you feel that the Jamaica's forage into independnce in '62 would have been different? I know that is an open-ended question, but I just want to hear various thoughts.
I have no real opinions about this, I just want to understand what are the missing pieces since a memoir is somewhat biased.
