BLACK RIVER, St Elizabeth - President of the People's National Party (PNP) Portia Simpson Miller scolded her general secretary at a mass rally here Saturday night for defying her instructions not to respond to criticisms levelled at her by Opposition Leader Bruce Golding.
"I tell you, Comrade gen sec, and I have to rebuke you before the people. I said you should not respond. You disobeyed me. We are not to respond," Simpson Miller said.
Last week, Golding, at a political meeting in Clarendon, signalling his intention to deal with serious issues, said people who wanted to dance up and down on political platforms should go and seek employment in a nightclub and leave the running of the country to people who are serious and who know how to run a country.
The biting comment obviously angered PNP general secretary Donald Buchanan who spared no effort in blasting Golding Saturday night.
"We notice something which has been started for some time, some despicable verbal innuendoes and statements by leaders of the Jamaica Labour Party, disrespectful of the women of our country and disrespectful of the leaders of our country," shouted Buchanan.
"... their mental agility is retarded, their intellectual capacity is retarded, their physical capacity is retarded so they don't have any emotion. They don't have any sense and brain to vibrate like the masses of the people of Jamaica are known to vibrate.
But hear them on Thursday night trying to denigrate the women and people of Jamaica about who jump and prance on platform must go a nightclub go look work. I say them renk and them feisty and them out of order! It is a disrespect to the women of Jamaica, many of whom from time to time either attend night clubs or some who make a living working in nightclub.
It is disrespect to the women and the people of Jamaica. Let me tell you, I am disobeying the party leader because she tell me to leave them alone and God will take care of them and the people will take care of them on August 27th."
But Buchanan was not let off the hook by Simpson Miller.
"I warned Comrade Buchanan that he should not respond," she said. "People want to get us to respond to their nastiness. I am not in it with anybody. I tell you why I am not responding and I asked you not to and you broke the golden rule.
"I will not dignify the comment by the leader of the opposition by responding to him. All I say is blessed is he who when men shall revile you and persecute and say all manner of evil against you for my name sake. But rejoice and be exceedingly glad, because rich will be your reward in heaven."
The prime minister told the crowd that she was being disrespected because she is "from humble beginnings", and signalled her intent to continue to dance on the political platform.
"I will not allow anyone to write my song for me or to sing my song or to dance my dance. I will continue.," she said.

Off they go. Out they go. We deserve better than that.
