PJ once said that he was a country boy who took country bus come ah town and because of education, he is what he is today.

So Ms.Cooper etal will tend not to forget the country boy/ yard boy relation.

This is truly one of the most inane articles I have ever read, coming from Carolyn Cooper who I believe is a UWI professor. I can sympathize with Mutty Perkins somewhat harsh assessment that UWI has become an intellectual ghetto when I read shallow nonsense like this. The rejection of Portia was not a class or prejudice issue...it was a competency issue. People were initially enthused about her because they thought that as the first woman PM, and as someone from a grassroots background she would be bringing something new to the table. But Portia made it very clear that she was no different from her predecessor, and that she would not be charting a new direction or bringing anything new to the table. Essentially she was PJ Patterson Pt II and the enthusiasm of the people waned as it became clear that there was nothing different there AND that she was out of her depth.

I suppose if one wants to be an entirely superficial one could say that Jamaica's new first family looks very much like a typical jamaican family. Patterson came to the job as a divorced bachelor, the Seaga and Manley family would be considered by some I guess to be ethnically mixed. If Portia was supposed to be a great inspiration because she was black and from a rootsy background I guess people who trade in that sort of thinking should be inspired by the fact that the Golding family looks like a typical Jamaican household. But in any event should any of this really matter if we say that we are out of many one people?

No revolution in the history of modern politics was lead by a yard boy nor a yard girl for that matter.
Castro, Che, Lennin, Bhudda, Muhammed, Ghandhi except for Jesus Christ it can be argued were all from middle class back grounds.
