Listening to opposition leader Portia Simpson-Miller speak at the one day PNP annual conference at the National Arena made me not only angry but nauseuous.

The woman is still hurting from her defeat and she is showing it and letting it all hang out in her indomitable style.

Her tone was that of the screeching "Nuh Draw Mi Tongue" speech, horrid and classless.

She refuses to accept defeat and she rants on like a lunatic making not one ounce of sense.

Pathetic too was to see all those Orange clad Jamaicans looking and listening to their leader as she delivered her bile at party conference.

It is her right to be critical and its her job to be in light of her being opposition leader.

What is sickening is her manner and delivery. She sounds like that screeching owl in the barn.

Portia is playing to an audience that much like the opposition's, will not really listen nor delve into anything that deals with the causes of the problems.
The audiences, the Jamaican electorate seems to demand the same sort of histrionics that one hears in church when the ministers are frothing at the mouth about sin and depravity.
When was the last time any one has heard a serious exposition of the Jamaican debt and its implications on free schooling and the other societal necessities?

No..it's "Fiyah bun dem" or the political speech equivalent, dance party-like rallies with flags and colors and banners and damned little content upon which voters SHOULD be basing their electoral decisions.

If Portia cares anything about Jamaica she should be quietly looking into solutions that will work on the causes of Jamaica's problems and not just speechify about how bad the JLP is and how it is the JLP that is responsible for everything bad.

BUt.....like in the U.S. were Portia to address the CAUSES of Jamaica's insurmountable problems, she would have to find another party because addressing causes is not in the programs of the PNP NOR the JLP.

Mind you, I am not picking on the Jamaican situation alone, what you see in Portia is no different than what I see in Hillary Clinton, Barack Obama, Rudy Guiliani, nitwit Mitt Romney and any and all of the two-party top-runners.

A right-wing talk show host in Boston put it most succinctly when he said that he agreed with everything Ron Paul, a libertarian Republican had said in a Republican candidate debate, he (the talk -show host) would not vote for him because he had no chance of winning.
Paul was for getting out of Iraq while all thye top runners were either for the war or in some cases all for invading Iran as well.
He enjoys maybe a 2-3% popularity amongst Republicans.

So it is in Jamaica. Were anyone to get up and say what the country needs is cures to the causes of the problems facing Jamaica and enter into serious discussions rather than repeating endless and meaningless Sunday sermon rhetoric, they would quickly be relegated to the back bench.
The Jamaican electorate would be bored, the party faithful dismayed and the truth-speaking candidate out on his/her backside.

It is said that in a democracy (so-called) we get the government we deserve.

You might also say that we get out of it only what (or whom) we put into it.

JC, it is for those reasons and more or less what you posted above that has made Bruce such an attractive proposition and alternative.

Portia and those scum in America you mentioned are all for sensation and ego feeds.
Bruce is a more analytical mind so too is my personal favourite talk show host, Wilmot Perkins.
If we Jamaicans allow ourselves to lose the opportunity that Bruce proposes by being lost in sensational personal innuendoes and stupid banter, then who can we blame but ourselves.

We need to grasp and add to the package that this new Administration brings by being active and involved and not to be caught in the bashing that former PM and her Gen Sec know best in doing.

I'll give you all of that BUT only time will tell if Golding is gold or just fool's gold.
As I've said of the top politicians in any party, in order to get there they generally have to sell out to the powers that demand a status quo and in most cases they have internalized (really believe) that the status quo, (the way things are) is the best way.
That and the fact that they know if they step too far out of line, the party faithful will dump them.

It takes someone with enormous charisma, a master salesperson and very smart person with both foresight and luck to buck the system and get away with it.

We shall see.

Ah but you are incorrect Q,

Things CAN get worse in Jamaica.
Sadly I feel that things have to get worse before they get better because the Jamaican people at this point, as bad as things are, are NOT ready for change.

I do not believe that the Jamaican electorate voted so much for change as they voted for something other than the PNP.

The JLP did not win any great victory or get any mandate for change.
The PNP lost the election by a thin margin.
That thin margin does not reflect any great desire for change, just a dissatisfaction with the party in power.

In much of the Third World things have degenerated far more than the social fabric of Jamaica has.
Jamaica can and probably will continue to slide downhill as the two parties cling to outmoded economic models and a disinterested (60% voted) but not yet desperate citizenry sits by and watches.

But no you won't perish, when things get bad enough the people will respond.

Much is true of what you say. Definitely the question about if Jamaicans want change. If they knew what change would bring, yes.

It`s up to the strength of leadership now along with the political will to administer change even though how unpopular the road will be.

Many of us are only seeking what goodies we can get to heal the bruise on our faces but are not faithful enough in goodwill and trust not to see where we can stop oyr noses from being cut off our faces.

Bruce has that ability to come across as a messiah. But will he become corrupted with power as time goes by or will he stick to his balance of mind and work for the good of all Jamaicans and not the status quo mister big man and the party loyalists.

The difference between the two of course is that Michael's manner and style was that of the people and he was a socialist at heart.
Had he been supported he would have brought about serious change.

Mr. Golding, although he has many progressive proposals still pins his hopes on failed neo-liberal economics and comes across as a party loyalist; one who will not buck the system.
As we said, only time will tell who and what P.M. Golding is and will turn out to be.

The thing that I regregt about Portia is the fact that I thought her as a light weight... Compared to all our Prime Minister lighter than Johsie lighter than Shearer.. But she was not from the elite.. I had hoped she would have step up her game... She did well to get where she got but she added no value... She brought the worst of our Jamaicaness to the table.. The tardiness, the psuedo religious aspect, a certain carelessness, lack of organisational skill, lack of respect for our insitutions.. What the effect is, will be we may simply look for leadership from the system... Would we have been better off wiht Davis or Powell ???? I think so... Would the PNP have won if it was not the Borgia as leader.. Probably... Maxwell is right unfortunately the PNP is the party of govermetn.. The JLP will lose the next general election... We need now to replace the current leadership.. Hopefully the next leader of the PNP will be Whittingham... Not from the former front bench.. We also need to get the Miss World Husband back into the JLP....
