comments on confrontation outside of parliament
Friday, 28 September 2007
Prime Minister Bruce Golding has described as unfortunate Thursday's confrontation involving PNP Member of Parliament for West Hanover Ian Hayles and at least three Government Senators.
Mr. Golding lamented that the incident occurred at a critical period when he is advocating changes to Parliament and expressed hope that there will not be a recurrence of this episode.
Mr. Hayles claimed he was physically assaulted by Senators Desmond McKenzie and Dwight Nelson.
He has since filed a complaint with the Political Ombudsman.
Mr. Hayles, was criticised by some members of the Government side after he failed to shake Prime Minister Bruce Golding's hand following his swearing in at Gordon House Thursday.
The new Member of Parliament claimed that he forgot to greet the Prime Minister due to the jitters associated with taking Thursday's swearing in exercise.
For his part, Senator McKenzie admitted that he raised objection to Mr. Hayles not shaking the Prime Minister's hand.
However he denied assaulting the West Hanover MP.
Senator Nelson also denied being involved in any incident with Mr. Hayles.
