PNP opposed appointment of new JTB chairman
Monday, 22 October 2007
The opposition People's National Party (PNP) is urging the government to reconsider the appointment of John Lynch to the position of Chairman of the Jamaica Tourist Board.
Mr. Lynch is a senior Vice President in the Sandals Group.
Opposition Spokesman on Tourism, Dr. Wykeham McNeil, is citing a conflict of interest.
"We feel and have always felt that the chairman of the JTB should be an independent person. The board members are a totally different case, we have always advocated and always had a strong private sector partnership on the board but in terms of the Chairman, we feel the chairman should be independent and insulated and in this case Mr. Lynch is not," said Dr. McNeil.
"Therefore we in the Opposition are against the appointment and although we do feel he could sit on the board, we should have an independent chairman and should maintain the tradition that has been set up as far back as 1989," he continued.
According to Dr. McNeil, Mr. Lynch's appointment is of concern to many in the tourist industry.
He says he hopes to meet shortly with Tourism Minister Ed Bartlett to discuss the matter.
Mr. Lynch also sits as a Director on the St. Lucia Tourist Board to which he appointed earlier this year.
