Recently the Comrade Herald was lamenting the number of so-called suspicious Foreign Nationals that had entered the Entry Ports of Jamaica and speculated as to the impact on crime. Apparently they were blind or were blinded, to that fact for 18 years until the PNP were disarmed of Almighty Power.

A Cuban, who reportedly attempted to hijack a JUTA taxi Tuesday night, was fatally shot.

He has been identified as 30-year-old Yosef Jomez Artigas of Havana Cuba and Porto Bello Meadows in St. James.

According to the police, about 9:40 Tuesday night Mr. Artigas chartered a JUTA bus to transport him to Ironshore in Montego Bay.

When the bus reached a section of the Highway, he reportedly ordered the driver to transport him to Runaway Bay in St. Ann.

The driver refused and Mr. Artigas reportedly pointed a firearm at him.

A struggle reportedly ensued during which Mr. Artigas was shot.

He reportedly jumped from the vehicle while the driver sped to the nearby Coral Gardens Police Station where he handed over a nine millimetre pistol with three live rounds.

The police then picked up Mr. Artigas who was taken to hospital where he died.

RJR News understands that Mr. Artigas was arrested by the Westmoreland police earlier this year on a charge of illegal possession of firearm and ammunition.

He was however given a three-year-probation order when he appeared in the Western Regional gun court.

if the Cuban robber was fatally shot, how was he arrested and given a three year probation? [img]/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/confused.gif[/img]

Cuba has always allowed discontents to leave Cuba legally. Leaving illegally is encouraged by the United States Cuban Adjustment Act.

This man is obviously a violent sort and as such more properly fits in with Jamaican society as Cuba has very little violent crime.

And you have a very good point in that if he wanted to participate in an election in an illegal manner he would have to leave Cuba where the elections are among the cleanest in the region. The Cuban equivalent of the Boy Scouts usually "guard" the Cuban polling places.

Finally, if he had left Cuba wouldn't he more correctly be called an ex-Cuban or a Cuban Jamaican rather than a Cuban?

No!
We do not know from the story under what circumstances he left Cuba.
He could easily be a visitor to Jamaica.
What we know from the story is he is a Cuban National and most likely still a Cuban Citizen.
I live here now, in the Land of the Free and the Home of the Brave, but I am a Jamaican and like to be referred to as a Jamaican.
