Man sues Jamaica Rifle Association for discrimination
Friday, 09 November 2007
A major row is looming between the Jamaica Rifle Association (JRA) and one shooter, Orville Henriques.
This week Mr. Henriques publicly took the association to task after his application to vie for participation in the World Shoot Qualifiers scheduled for this weekend was refused.
Now the shooter says he applied to the Court for an injunction to prevent the Association from proceeding with the tournament without him.
"Now the fact that they refuse the second time leaves us no choice but to take it to the Supreme Court, so my legal team did what they had to do. They are now in the process of sending a copy of the Supreme courts decision to all media houses," he said.
According to Mr. Henriques the JRA has not offered him an explanation for refusing his entry.
"Up until now they have not given any concrete reason, that say I am not clean or I have a criminal records, they do not like my height or my color, but nothing has been said. I guess I have just been singled out," he said.
The shooting trials are being held to select a team to the World Shooting Championships in Bali, Indonesia in August and September next year.
Efforts to contact officers of the Association were unsuccessful as we were told they were not at the Headquarters.
