Question about Head Of State

Many Blessings All,

I am a student at Nottingham Trent University in England and also the President of the African and Caribbean Society at my university. I was just wondering what the average Jamaican feels about still having the Queen of England as their Head Of State/Queen of Jamaica (Even though its a ceremonial title and she is represented by Kenneth Hall, Governer General).

I know that this may seem like a random question but I need to know and I felt that it can only be answered properly by a Jamaican who either lives in Jamaica or is still very much involved with Jamaica.

Your replies will be much appreciated.

99% of us are not in Jamaica, it would be better to ask this question in a letter to the editor of one of the daily papers in Jamaica.

Over the years since Independence, if Jamaican politicians - JLP and PNP - truly wanted to replace the Queen with, say, a Jamaican ceremonial President (head of state and head of government would remain as separate roles), it would have been done already. Also, I don't get the sense that this change has wide popular support; only pockets of support among certain groups in the intellectual and chattering classes. This is not to say that the masses are resistant to this idea, only that, in my opinion, they have more important considerations.

The queen could be replaced while the issue of Jamaica's final appellate court is being decided. Some want the UK privy council replaced with a Caribbean Court of Appeals. Personally, I like the unbiased detachment of the UK privy council, but would also favor a final Jamaican Supreme Court that would be supreme in the true sense of the word, and not the present arrangement where that body is superceded by the 'Jamaica Court of Appeals.'

It should be stressed that having the Queen as Jamaica's head of state is NOT the cause of its current problems.

Now I think that there are quite a few lawyers who wouldn't want to loose the letters QC behind their names. But I guess I'm just being cynical here.

It bears repeating. You are right the Queen has nothing to do with Jamaica's current problems.

Had we got rid of the Queen years ago I would not have objected....Now I think we could better use the resources that would go into the change to do something else...

I recall I was surprised that there was such enthusiasm for royality during a royal visit to Jamaica..

By the way Tuffy do you save all your threads ????? And I enjoyed re-reading my ramblings.. Forgot I wrote that one, quite amusing!

LOL.... Wahalla peple tink mi a kep Spreadsheet...no mi just has a penchant to remember some likkle ramblings. It is a lesson I learned right here on the Board after being attacked left and right and been banned so many times.
I learn to seek, find and reuse if necessary.

That's all good for the UK,but Jamaica does not need a queen.
Nor any attachment to monarchy. Monarchy is called fuedalism for the reason that they stay in control by a stragegy devide, instigate and support fueds between the subjects to distract their energies and control their facytors of production. Ask the Irish.

Do you not difentiate between absolute monarchy and a powerless constitutional monarchy... ???????

I see a number of advantages in the constitutional monarchy, but it will all depend on the personality of the monarch. For instance I like the idea of the very loose configeration of the Commonwealth.. Where even republics are members... Nhurham, Mandela and Manley all commented favourably on the EIIR leadership.. Now what will happn once Chucky takes over as his focus shifts....

... I mean the Norge, Swedes, Danes and Duth all have monarchies but does it have significance... Was it the Danish king who during WWII put on the star of David and so many Danes wore the star of David that it significantly reduced the number of jews who were etnicaly cleansed// Juan Carlos and his defense of the Cortez is another example..

Look get rid of the Queen by all means as hea =d of state.... The head of state it is essentially a post of rictual and ceromoney embodying contiituity of the state... Do it at not extra cost...
