Sunday, 25 November 2007
Tension is high in sections of Central Kingston Sunday evening following the shooting of Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) candidate for the Rae Town Division, Rosalie Hamilton.
Ms. Hamilton, who sustained a wound to the chest, is in stable condition in hospital.
RJR News has been informed that the JLP candidate might undergo surgery Sunday night to have the bullet removed.
Angry residents have since blocked roads in the area.
There is now a heavy police presence.
It is reported that shortly after 1 o'clock Ms. Hamilton was with other persons sitting outside the gate to her Rae Town house.
An alleged eyewitness told our news centre that a man from a nearby community walked up and opened fire indiscriminately.
One of the bullets hit Ms. Hamilton.
Ms. Hamilton, who was elected Councillor for Rae Town following the 2003 Local Government Election, was last week nominated for the December 5 polls.
And Member of Parliament for Central Kingston, Ronnie Thwaites, is appealing to residents of Rae Town to remain calm.
Mr. Thwaites spoke to our news centre on his way to the community.
Senior officials of the Government including Deputy Prime Minister Dr. Ken Baugh, National Security Minister Derrick Smith as well as JLP General Secretary Karl Samuda went to the area to try and restore calm.
In the meantime, Chairman of JLP Area Council One, Desmond McKenzie, has asked the Minister of National Security to provide increased police presence in the area.
Mr. McKenzie says he is worried that there could be reprisals.
