Murder figure increases by 14 per cent

There is more alarming news concerning the country's murder rate.

New data from the police reveal that 1,300 persons have been killed since the start of the year.

Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of crime, Mark Shields, says this represents a 14 per cent increase over last year.

He confirmed that there has been a spike in killings since last week.

According to figures provided by DCP Shields, <span style='font-size: 20pt'>26 murders </span>were recorded between Friday and Monday morning.

was there not a fall last year from 2005???? or was there not a boast that teh murder rate took a 20% fall in the first quater of this year...????

Another Bloody weekend ?

It was a bloody weekend, as <span style='font-size: 17pt'>20 persons </span>lost thir lives between Friday and Sunday.

Nineteen of those dead were killed by guns.

The alarming figures follow those released by the police last Monday, showing that <span style='font-size: 17pt'>26 killings </span>were recorded between November 23 and 26.

A police Sergeant was among those killed on the weekend.

He is 52-year old Sergeant Allan Lindsay, assigned to the Freeport Police Station.

He was shot and killed Sunday afternoon.

The lone knife incident occurred in Braeton St. Catherine, when a dispute between an aunt and her niece, resulted in the stabbing death of the niece, 32-year-old Marsha Russell.

Three men died in Red Hills Road, Spanish Town, Grange Hill and Westmoreland in what were alleged encounters with the police.

Another man was shot and killed Sunday by a licensed firearm holder during an alleged robbery at a fast food establishment in Twin Gates Plaza, St. Andrew.

A breakdown of the recorded killings revealed that 18 males lost their lives in the shootings.

A further breakdown shows that Kingston was the bloodiest parish with eight shooting deaths, followed by St. Catherine with five.

St. James was next with three shooting deaths and Clarendon and St. Ann with two and one respectively.

Data from the Constabulary Communication Network (CCN), also revealed that three men were shot and injured in two of the shootings.

12 killed &lt; 24 hours

At least twelve persons were killed between Monday night and Tuesday morning in separate incidents across Kingston, St. Thomas, St. Catherine and Clarendon.

Numbered among the dead are five persons who were shot in Ashleigh Hall near Water Lane in Vere, Clarendon in a pre-dawn attack.

Scores of people descended on the death scene of two houses in a yard in Water Lane, where five persons met violent deaths.

Police theorise that the deadly attack was carried out by a group of heavily armed men.

When the gunmen were done, 43-year-old Lurline Lewis and her 21-year-old son Shamar Davis; 46-year-old Delora Green and her common law husband 33-year-old Daniel Parkinson and 48-year-old Delroy Riley lay dead.

The scene was an ugly mess of blood and mangled bodies.

Shemar Davis was reportedly found with a gun.

The police theorise he was the target of the attack, as he is said to be one of the top member of the so called "Gang of Nine" operating in the community.

The leader of the gang was taken into custody on the weekend and Mr. Davis was accused of leaking information to the cops.

Superintendent in Charge of the parish Radcliffe Lewis said it was the most horrific scene he had witnessed.

Tuesday' killings bring to 113, the number of persons killed in the parish since the start of the year.
