Now listen, I know im going to get alot of hateful remarks on this topic,
especially by those who are (party-otic)
but i know deep down this is something i truly believe.
Jamaica though a great and beautiful country, is for want of a
better word cursed and im not talking the voodoo type of curse but
more of a self inflicted curse.
Since independence in the 1960's many of our post-colonial brothers have grown
their economies at staggering levels and their crime rate remains low and their
peoples enjoy a way of life which is to be envied.
Jamaica on the other hand has,... well, in the 40 to 50 years of
post-colonilism hasnt really acheived much for the vast majority of
its people. Sure we have running water, roads, electricity to the main
parts of the island as well as numerous universities all over the island.
But these are basics and are things which we should expect not HOPE to expect.
So what is the problem with jamaica, why it will never reach the promise land
of even near developed status. The problem isnt our crime, it isnt our
music and it isnt our garisson political system, it isnt that we used to be
slaves some how many odd years ago.
The problem is our so called great Jamaican Culture. And Quite frankly
am i sick and feed up which this culture we so desperately try to hang on to
dear life with.
To me, the Jamaica culture comprises of many things from the mundane like
talking patiois and listening to dancehall, because 'apparently' those are musts
for being jamaican. To the very serious things, like putting up with poor service and
performance and giving man a "bly" for pretty much everything.
And quite frankly its the latter that upsets me the most, Because, if almost seemingly in
many business places around jamaica, the boss tells the workers(usually female)
to give the customer the worst customer service possible in return for shoddy service.
And due to our culture of just giving them a bly, we accept it and move on. That has to change.
This is the fundamental problem with our society, we as a people have impregnated ourselves
with a culture that doesnt want to achieve anything great but is willing to settle
for very little and that applies it self all across the board to the fabric of life
in jamaica, Down the way that politicians can get away with anything,to business's like the JPS,
raising their prices whilst practicing unfair billing system, despite still having ever frequent powercuts
and all people do is grumble and go on about their merry way. It also why our education system has gotten
worse and our living conditions continue to get even worse.
Down the simply, not littering, urinating on sidewalks.
Because we pretty much have "a shrug it away" society,
"ahh cant bother, man, mi jus a go let it slide, yahh".
I think personally the jamaican culture is to accept anything and expect very little of everything, because
we feel cant do any better.
Quite simply our culture needs to change, and quite frankly you cant blame government for mismanagement
because we(the majority) elected them into power and if you continue accept whatever they give you, then they end up
feeling they can get away with anything.
And now i think this is part which might really anger alot of people
and let me put it blankly, i dont think jamaica was ready for independence in the 1960's
but with britain under serious economic pressures at the end of world war 2, they were more than happy to
give it away and leave.
Secondly, i dont believe any country which has a black majority, like jamaica and africa, are capable of
proper management or their economies(i know it sounds racist, but look at the empirical evidence) again because
our leaders are choosen from our culture so he/she does things according to what is comfortable within our culture.
This is not because black people are inferior but because we view are selves as inferior, so suffer from a victim
mentallity, which we refuse to break and instead find it fashionable to keep blaming "them" or one another.
Quite, simply though i think our culture, our jamaican culture, our way of thinking has done us a great deservice.
Until we change our culture, nothing will change, i look through some of these posts and people cry
for a fundamental change in jamaica and quite frankly i think thats were we should go and put at least 90% of
the effort into, that is trying to create a culture were HARD-WORKING, HONEST,CREATIVE, EDUCATED people
are things that matter most to us, and were such things as corruption and yes even pissing on the side of the roads
are culturally villified, and a culture were we dont put up with very little because it so life go.
Finally, our culture is also the reason why i dont truly recognise myself as a Jamaican, nor do i want to
be seen as being jamaican because of all the things it illicits.
