Hanover Eastern member of parliament and former general-secretary of the Opposition People's National Party (PNP), Dr D K Duncan, and his parliamentary colleague who represents Manchester Central, Peter Bunting, will compete for the post of general-secretary at Sunday's meeting of the party's National Executive Council (NEC) scheduled for the Jamaica Conference Centre.
Party officials contacted yesterday were deliberately vague about the individuals nominated for the position, while others who are usually accessible made themselves unavailable.
Outgoing general-secretary Donald Buchanan told the Observer that he could not disclose the names of the nominees before he reported to the party's executive at 6:00 pm.
Wounded since its loss in the two recent elections and struggling to raise cash, the party is still divided on the leadership of Portia Simpson Miller, according to PNP sources.
They have also raised concerns that the job of general-secretary will be very demanding, requiring long hours for the next several years.
Should Duncan get the nod, it will be his second time in the post, having held the position in the 1970s before being promoted to the Cabinet as minister of mobilisation.
Party insiders say that Bunting, who has been actively campaigning for the job, is hoping to use the position to strengthen his bid for the leadership of the party in the future.
