JLP administration pays out millions to consultants
Wednesday, 30 January 2008
Despite howls of protest while in opposition, the Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) government continues to pay out millions of dollars to consultants, with one person earning $900,000 per month. A list tabled in parliament Tuesday showed 90 consultants attached to the various ministries and government agencies.
The Finance Ministry accounts for more than half of the consultants with 46.
Twenty three consultants are attached to the Fiscal Services, with the highest paid consultant pulling in a monthly salary of $900,000.
In most instances, the consultants are paid in United States dollars.
At least three of the consultants were employed after the change of government.
At the Andrew Holness-led Ministry of Education, five consultants were contracted since the change of government.
Their pay-bill costs taxpayers $10 million each year, plus a 25 per cent gratuity at the end of their contracts.
The Ministry of National Security employed three consultants after the elections, bringing to five the number employed to that ministry.
The list of contract employees was submitted to Parliament in response to a request from opposition parliamentarian Ronnie Thwaites.
There is no indication whether the list of consultants shows an increase or decrease on the number employed under the previous administration.
