Dear Editor

I am a student at Excelsior Community College where I major in hospitality management. I recently visited a prominent resort in the popular tourism town of Montego Bay.
It was clear that the front desk agent was not in favour of having local visitors. Although a local was at the front of the reception line, the worker beckoned to a Caucasian to bypass the local standing in front of her. It was then she realised that the humble local was the person paying for the rooms that several Caucasians would be taking.

After witnessing such an ordeal, the local's visitors asked to be taken to a more hospitable property where their business would be appreciated.

It is time we as a people let go of the stigma attached to tourism and learn to appreciate our own people whenever they decide to patronise the country's tourism sector. </div></div>

Dear Editor

It is time we as a people let go of the stigma attached to tourism and learn to appreciate our own people whenever they decide to patronise the country's tourism sector. </div></div>

If it was noit for the action of the manley administration of the 70's,Jamaicans woiuld have to show a pass to enter resort areas ny now. I heard of the time when blacks in Jamaica couldn't swim in the hotel pools, until of course, Barbara Blake-Hanna's father took a dip and they emptied the pool after..."We've come a long way baby"...and from the look of things we have further to go.</span>

After Evon blake jumped in the poolat Myrtle Bank hotel Down Town Kingston, tbne rules were changed yes. But only in that hotel.
That happened in the 50's, but op to earlt 70's black hotel workers could not enter hotel lobby.
Because they couldn't even get a job to work there other than doorman,porter or maid.

<span style="color: #660000">That's strange, I remember my father being a manager in an international hotel from before I could remember. I went to High School starting in 1975. Although there were not many other black managers, at the time.
I also remember being rudely treated by Hotel staff who would say nasty things, sometimes. At the restaurant there, the waiters were reluctant to serve myself, and my siblings.
Also, before 1975, I remember swimming in the hotel pool and being given some strange looks by the staff members. Maybe they weren't yet used to someone of colour swimming in what used to be a reserve for white privilege.

Inexcusable.... Was the worker in question a Jamaican ???? Jamaicans seem to have a problem with customer services to each other.. If I was a manager of that enterprise I would be [censored] off.....

Hotels never it seems to me market themselves to Jamaicans.. This is a potential money spinner in the off peak seasons for them...

You the working class sacrfice or risk their good for their rights?
Why is uit that more black Jamaicans still cant get management jibs in the industrt?
you think that of the local managers decide to loose little so that they cam have bigger, it wouldn'r change?
Of course they all think that the business will move some where else. Just like they did with Myrtle Bank.

In answer to Dr. Dudd's questions:

1. The Issa Family owned the Myrtle Bank hotel.
2. The Issa family owns/operates hotels on the North coast of Jamaica.
3. Joseph Issa, according to rumors was ostracized from his family for his marriage to an Indian (probably had to do with business rivalry, or something of the sort...)
4. Pearnel Charles tried to unionize one of the Negril hotels of the Issa's and ended-up with all the employees of the hotel being fired, whether they were in the union or not. Then they turned around and re-hired within the same families that they had fired. Talk about dividing families.
5. A journalist reported being in attendance at one of the evening shows in an Issa hotel, and described 'clitoris rings' on one of the dancers. Talk about letting it all hang-out. Certainly can't take kids to that show. Is that sexual exploitation? I can see why my father used to work 24/7...</span>
