Jamaica signs off on US$30m IDB loan

Minister of Finance and the Public Service Audley Shaw yesterday signed a US$30 million (J$2.13 billion) policy-based loan agreement with Luis Albert Moreno, president of the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB).

The loan is part of a proposed US$90-million programme to enhance competitiveness in Jamaica during the 2008/09 fiscal year. During the year, the Government intends to sign two additional agreements with the IDB to complete the programme.

The loan is based on Government's commitment to effect reforms to transform education and improve fiscal management.

When the loan agreements are complete, the Government of Jamaica will have borrowed US$150 million (J$10.84 billion) as part of policy-based agreements from the IDB

this mut be part of the replacement of some of the curent debt with lower interest rate debt.

No seriously Rich - I know there's the diff between the private and the govt bux ...

But what I can't understand - why always is the govt hitting us up with how many visitors we had this year and how many we had last year and touting this increase in # of visits and this increase in that ...

Why?

What difference does it make?

You know I've always said the whole tourism thing does little to nothing for Jamaica ... it's a total wool over our eyes, IMHO.

So then why is there always such a big hoopla about the #'s if the tourism money / visitors?

since tournism is a major source of employment for jamaicans (plus the inflow of foreign currency into the country) it is important to measure the health of the industry.

Somethin's not right.

Tourism is a major source of employment for Jamaicans - ok - let's say yes ... but how is the industry benefiting Jamaicans?

I swear Rich, I could be wrong and totally emotional on this front - but I don't see it benefiting Jamaicans much. It only seems to benefit the tourists and the areas they visit, the faucets they turn on and get running water from, the roads they travel, the light switches they turn on ...

i am disputing the major source of employment claim..fi real...i want to see concrete facts and i dont mean juss the obvious jobs of changing bed linens....

i want to see the multiplier effect not only in di money but the ancilliary biznizes it engenders and encourage..fi real...
