for redundancy they use portable external hard drives.

i dont know if this question makes sense but can a local PC be made to have networking capabilities instead of purchasing a dedicated server? Or am I back to the same issue I am trying toget away from? Many times, I am the only external user of the database so it may not be cost effective for them to purchase a dedicated server.

However, the dedicated servers would work for some of them

Yes, because then the network drive/resource is simply the shared drive/resource on the local PC. In other words, once they share the local drive/folder it becomes a shared resource. However, sharing a root drive is not a good idea, hence folders; i.e. create a folder, e.g. Business Tools, move the relevant files there, and share that folder. I think the local PC would have to be setup as a hosting PC, then you should be able to access the resource remotely.

Depending on the PC itself, accessing the resource may cause a bit of performance drag in the event someone is using it while you're trying to get access.

thanks a bunch CEW. You cleared up a couple of things for me.

for the bigger customers who dont already have servers, I am going to recommend they purchase dedicated serves to address their growth needs <span style="font-weight: bold">plus make my life easier.</span> That is an easy sell because they are reaching capacity and need to consider future growth strategies.

as for the littler ones, I will try the work around ideas and see how it goes.

For the smaller customers, you could schedule their work at night. Let them know that it will require you to charge them a premium to do the work afterr hours, therefore it would be cheaper in the long run for them to install the srever and make both your lives easier.

Just point out to them that you are, improving efficiency, saving them money (your services and their loss time), and increasing reliability, thereby improving their profit margin.
