Apple released a operating system update a little while back. Make sure you download it next time you sync your iPhone. Once you do you will notice that you can now open Power Point, Word and Excel files.

EFF begins campaign to make unlocking phones easier

<span style="font-family: 'Courier New'">The Electronic Frontier Foundation has begun a campaign to persuade the U.S. Copyright Office to extend an exemption from the Digital Millennium Copyright Act on the unlocking of phones from their networks, as well as &quot;jailbreaking,&quot; or tweaking phones so they'll run blocked programs. </span>

EFF Kicks Off Campaign to Free Your Phone
Software Locks on Cell Phones Stifle Competition and Cripple Consumers


San Francisco - The Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) is asking for the public's help in its new campaign to free cell phones from the software locks that stifle competition and cripple consumers. The campaign's website is FreeYourPhone.org.

Hundreds of thousands of cell phone owners have modified their phones to connect to a new service provider or run the software of their choosing, and many more would like to. But the threat of litigation under the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA) has driven them underground.

The DMCA prohibits &quot;circumventing&quot; technical protection measures used to protect copyrighted works. But many cell phone manufacturers and service providers build these software locks to protect their business models instead of copyrighted material.

&quot;Apple locks its iPhone to AT&amp;T and prevents users from installing any software that has not been pre-approved by Apple,&quot; said EFF Senior Intellectual Property Attorney Fred von Lohmann. &quot;Consumers need a DMCA exemption to lift the cloud of legal risk that otherwise serves only to reduce competition and consumer choice.&quot;

Every three years, the U.S. Copyright Office convenes a rulemaking to consider granting exemptions to the DMCA's ban on circumvention to mitigate the consumer harm. EFF has already filed exemption requests with the Copyright Office addressing the issues, but the rulemaking proceeding also accepts public comments about the proposals.

&quot;Companies are using the DMCA to threaten customers out of exercising their consumer rights,&quot; said EFF Civil Liberties Director Jennifer Granick. &quot;The Copyright Office needs to hear real stories about how these software locks frustrate consumers and developers.&quot;

On FreeYourPhone.org, people can sign EFF's petition to the Copyright Office and share their stories about cell phone frustrations. EFF will also help people officially submit those stories to the Copyright Office before the February 2 deadline. The Copyright Office will hold public hearings on the DMCA exemption requests in Washington, DC, and California in the spring, and the final rulemaking order will be issued in October.

I also support them. The other day I went to Wal-Mart where I purchased a cheap GoPhone as a temporary measure while I await the next Gen Android Handsets, to my shock and horror you cannot sync or do anything at all via its USB Port. In effect AT&amp;T forces you to do everything over its Network even though the Phone is billed as a MultiMedia Device.

Considering that Pay-As-You-Go Service is typically way more expensive than a Structured Plan, this is a double rip.
This really calls for a class action suit to stop AT&amp;T from extorting GoPhone Customers.

There is the chance that the next upgrade of the iPhone will include enhanced graphics - allowing users to play games that feature 3-D graphics.

Nine-year old whiz-kid writes iPhone application

(Reuters) - While most children his age sketch on paper with crayons, nine-year old Lim Ding Wen from Singapore, has a very different canvas -- his iPhone.

Lim, who is in fourth grade, writes applications for Apple's popular iPhone. His latest, a painting program called Doodle Kids, has been downloaded over 4,000 times from Apple's iTunes store in two weeks, the New Paper reported on Thursday.

The program lets iPhone users draw with their fingers by touching the iPhone's touchscreen and then clear the screen by shaking the phone.

<span style="font-weight: bold">&quot;I wrote the program for my younger sisters, who like to draw,&quot; Lim said. His sisters are aged 3 and 5.</span>
<span style="font-weight: bold">Lim, who is fluent in six programing languages</span>, started using the computer at the age of 2. He has since completed about 20 programing projects.

His father, Lim Thye Chean, a chief technology officer at a local technology firm, also writes iPhone applications.

&quot;Every evening we check the statistics emailed to us (by iTunes) to see who has more downloads,&quot; the older Lim said.

The boy, who enjoys reading books on programing, is in the process of writing another iPhone application -- a science fiction game called &quot;Invader Wars.&quot;

For the iPhone owners out there and others:

Does iPhone have any good handwriting recognition software? If so, how good is it in deciphering the average persons handwriting (non-Doctors ofcourse)?

Do you need to pick the correct text or sentence from a list possible tries, or does it gess correct most of the time?

Thanks. I don't have an IPhone but since my first brush with one with they first came out I have been downloading and collecting the hacks.
I think if I buy another Handset it will be an Android based second-gen machine.

I have thought about jailbreaking and unlocking but some of the iPhone forums I visit from time to time are full of people posting problems with their iPhones after doing so. One feature or another does not work right etc... . I'm sure most have little or no issues but I'm happy with my phone the way it is at the moment. maybe I will try to customize it in the future.
