Generally speaking, spyware is typically found in installed software. Banner ads are simply HTML codes (special hypertext links) which if you click on them, take you to a default website. Because it is advertising, once a user clicks on the ad, the integrity of the linked site becomes the issue as it is here that the tracking of personal information via cookies become possible.

The Banner Ads can have JavaScript web scripting code also associated with the banner, which could cause a cookie to be installed on the client computer, and thus tracking of personal web habits, etc.
I would avoid going to websites that even have a remote chance of installing spyware. Also using an anti-spyware software would help to prevent spyware from affecting your computer. Go to the help option on the browser and search for the relevant information. When I complete web browsing, I routinely clear my browser's cache, and remove spyware, and other private information, via my the web-browser's features.
Even better, if you use a router, is to configure the router to automatically block certain websites, based on the websites reported by the anti-spyware software, or any website you suspect by experience. I save myself a lot of trouble by this method, although a little technical.</span>
