Does anyone know anything about home networking? Not setting up a wireless network, but a wired network. How to make my own cables, how to terminate a cable with a wall jack, what equipment to use etc?

I need to connect 8 items to the internet by network cables, but the router only has 4 jacks. I want to keep the router in the basement, but then I barely get a wireless signal upstairs.

I have Verizon Fios, so the Verizon router gets connected to the cable box as well. It's all a mess of wires and I just would like to neaten things and connect everything properly, instead of having cables coming though holes in the wall.

I tried making my own cable but now I can't get more than a 100.0 mbps connection, when I used to get 1000.0. The color wires in the cable don't match with the colors on the jack. I'm close, just need some pointers.

Buy a 8 port switch, uplink the router to the switch. You should be able to run cables from both router and switch ports. That's how I have it configured at home where I use both wired and wireless.

Re cabling, I've forgotten far more about making, terminating, etc., than I care to remember, so will leave those for somebody else

and you should keep the router in the highest point possible but never mind that might be for wireless signals only...
