this solved the problem.
On my laptop, the settings for NETBIOS/WIN were not enabled.
I went thru the steps in the article and enabled the right resources.
I can access my desktop files on my laptop now which is what I wanted to do.
I'll tackle the static IP address issue for the printers later tomorrow.

you know what so did I because both systems were networked until earlier this week
I had expected the NETBIOS to be disabled on my desktop since it was that system I changed the OS and all the settings on but the NETBIOS was enabled on it. I was confused but decided to check the laptop and surprisingly enough the options were selected

on my laptop settings, I clicked the share printer option.
It then created a whole bunch of icons which are duplicates of the original icons but say "auto" in front.
I can use the "auto" option on <span style="font-weight: bold">my desktop</span> to print but not the original selection. I am assuming that because they are on the same network, I can go thru my laptop to print but I cannot print directly from my desktop.
I know it has to do with the wired vs wireless vs static vs dynamic thing, but I cant think it thru at the moment
what should be my port on my desktop, since it is hard-wired to the router?
my printers are hard-wired directly to my router as well. I will eventually run a USB cable between my desktop and printers but I dont have that at the moment.
on my laptop, the printers work but the ports are IP addresses which wont work for the desktop.
okay figured out the problem with one of my printers and re-installed the correct driver. I can now print on my laser printer from both the desktop and laptop. The port setting was definitely wrong but once I went thru the installation again, I got the network settings correct.
I just need to resolve the Dell printer which always gives me some headache.
OK. let's backup a little. The printers are hardwired to the router, and presumably, currently have IP addresses allocated to them. That being the case, the systems should see them. However, if you choose to give them static addresses, you should be able to use the add printer option to add a network printer.
Do you get an error when you do it that way? If so, what is the error message?

OK then, ignore the piece above. You just saved yourself the cost of another platter of wings I was a tad perplexed that it was giving you problems as it should be a fairly easy setup.

What's the error message that comes back? Did you have to install the printer driver manually on the laptop or was the printer detected automatically?

no error msg, it just hangs when it tries to print.
I uninstalled and tried re-installing the AIO again. TG told me which out of the two options - Personal Installation or Network installation to use, but I just cant remember which one is the best option.
before i did this i looked at the router and saw that the printer was attached to it with a static IP address. just like the laser printer.
