Supposedly, the best free firewall available is Comodo Firewall Pro (which I use) but it can be a bit of a nuisance with the number of popups. You can check it out here. A good alternative is Zone Alarm.
For antivirus software, there is Avast, or AVG. I use Avast but either one is excellent.
An excellent privacy, optimization, and cleaning tool is CCleaner.aka ChurchDude. I want that moniker back! Until then....

Thanks for the link.
I use a few of those already.
I think free software from the major players is good to get free and to use free, but I think where it donation-ware from smaller companies or individuals one should always try to make a donation if you find it productive.
To write or debug even the smallest program requires a lot of time and effort, so I think a little reward for that effort is good.Comment

Coming from a programming background, I can appreciate the time and effort that goes into developing a program and so I agree with you re donationware. I've done it in the past, and if I come across a program I find useful that falls into that category, I'll do so again.aka ChurchDude. I want that moniker back! Until then....

I am very late to any programming so I know how difficult it is.

DosBox, Quintessential Player or any of my favourite iso burners did not make it in.Comment

As for QCD (the media player), I recall using it some years ago, but I can't recall if it was Vista compatible.

Lots of Gamers still use DosBox for old Dos Games.
I am using it or trying to play some games on the Nokia Internet Tablet.
Doom is working with Wiimote from a straight port, but I could not figure out Wolfistien3d, seems no one is interested in that. I need to get a keyboard, as it is hard to type in prompt with the on screen keyboard.Comment

Speaking of DOS games, one that I was addicted to was Boloball. Too bad they didn't continue developing it beyond Windows ME compatability.

Only one I really played was Wolfenstien3D I know it old and politically correct but I still liked it a lot. ROTT and Doom were the successors to it. I have never heard of BoloBall.
I think I am going to keep trying to get Wolf3D to work on the tablet.Comment

I see the public ranks these. Actually the best image management program and the one that made me quit using Irfanview for image manipulation <span style="font-style: italic">(I still use it as my desktop player and bulk renamer)</span> is Canon's DPP Professional, but you have to have a get from Canon's Website or it comes with your digital camera.Comment
