Question Before I Post Anything on an Internet Message Board.

The company I work for has some questionable, if not immoral business practices IMHO.

They have a web site with a forum much like the one here on jamaicans.com which I am considering using to start to publicly question some of their policies. [img]/forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif[/img]

I gave them my email account when I registered with the message board and that is all the info they have on me.

My question is if they wanted to, could they find out my identity and fire my backside? I know they could attempt to trick me by sending me an email to try and get me to reveal myself to them, but is there another "tech related" way they could find me?

All post would be made here at home on my own PC, and never on the computer I use at work.

If they tried really hard, they probably could. YOur IP address is logged when you post, not that that gives away your identity, but it narrows it down.

If it was me, I would re-register with a new email address, one that I created ONLY for that purpose, then I would go to the library or an internet cafe and post. Better safe than sorry.

you can disguise yourself with email addresses but as mentioned they can get a court order to have your ISP reveal your identity based on your IP address. So I would not sleep too well most of the time :-)
I did read about software available to cloak your IP and maybe you should do a google to see if it really exists and if it works.

Going elsewhere as ochigal suggested is a very good option.

They can easily find your identity,through E/mail lists that are available much lie the old telephone lists,that telemarketers use. Yes it is available andmay not be submitted by your ISP,but by others sites that yoiu r registered for free ware for example. I would register a new E/mail on your existing account usinh an alias,and use that account to communicate with them.

I would also be cautious about such things as characteristic misspellings of words, identifiable writing style, and characteristic themes. Remember analysis and identification of his writing was how the Unibomber was caught, after what was it, 17 years or so?

I don't think the library is a good idea. They do ask for ID, if I am not mistaken. an internet cafe is the safest route.

There are a few internet cafes in my town so I can visit a different one each time I post.

The fact that you have posted here already means the administrator and/or webmaster of this site already got your IP, browser, operating system -(OS) details. With that they can find out your ISP and even log how often, how long and what topics you view what website you came from and which website you went to when u left this one.

1] Getting a new email address will not help you
2] Regardless of your email address(s) your IP will remain the same
3] When you post messages in forums like these your IP, Browser, User-Agent and OS is logged
4] Forums sometimes use tracking cookies, active-x controls and java to track you
5] Forums like these uses HTTP server side variables known as Glabal variables to extract info from your browser.


SOLUTION:
=========
1] Firstly install an anonymous multiproxy on your machine
2] Install a good firewall(s), antivirus on your machine
3] Install good keyloggers, adware and anti-spyware apps on your machine
3] Install a good cache/registry cleaner on your machine
4] Disable cookies in your browser or just allow the minimum cookie option in your browser.
5] Review your browser advance settings and your browser security settings

Still your main asset will be the multiproxy, firewall and spyware.

Either that or go to an internet cafe.

Morpheus is right.

We use www.anonymizer.com (wi nuh badder fi here, but elsewhere on the 'Net)
and McAfee Firewall w/ hardware firewall on both router and modem (DSL)
a dozen different programs like Spybot and a few others
and our machines' cashe and registry are automatically wiped daily or more often
and all cookies are disabled and the few necessary ones for our browser (use sintin like Opera and NOT MS IE or Netscape! we use Opera.) to run must be individually allowed manually
and all settings are run at max security.

Now... is this a pain in the patootie? Yeah! It is. You bet. And it takes a looooong time fi see silly junk like half the stuff people hotlink to here and on other like Boards.

Do I care? NO!!

We run our machines absolutely 'blindly' -- meaning that even the best hacker websites can't "see our machines". (Well, the one I'm on now is a bit less high security...but then I rarely use this old thing for more than being here and one or two other such Boards; it's just my "J'com computer" any more.)


Look. Go to www.grc.com and enter the website. Test your mahcine (SHieldsUP! and Leak Test, etc), and it'll tell you what's wrong (it'll be PLENTY!!!) with the security on your machine as it is right now...AND how to fix it.

When these people can't see your machine, you're doing well. (They'll tell ya so)

At that point, ask me - or better, ask Mr Witchy - where you oughtta go next, for your next steps in ultra-high security. He knows hackers in such places as the Gaza Strip... and Belarus... who, if they can't hack into your machine, can assure you that the United States government sure as heck can't.

If a Court orders your machine to be confiscated, it will probably still yeild proof that 'twas you...
unless Morpheus meant you to use one of THE CAFE's machies, and NOT your own laptop!
